The Volvo FMX series of commercial heavy-duty trucks are being proposed for military use. The FMX series trucks are available with 4x2, 4x4, 6x4, 6x6, 8x4, 8x6, 8x8, 10x4, and 10x6 configurations. The FMX 8x8 is one of them.

The FMX series evolved from the previous hugely successful Volvo FM series. Though new trucks are revised and updated. These heavy-duty vehicles were originally developed for mining, construction work, and to carry engineering and other heavy equipment. Some modifications are made for standard commercial trucks prior to military use. These modifications might include special paint, brackets for weapons and so on.

The militarized Volvo FMX 8x8 truck was demonstrated with a load handling system, which loads and unloads flatracks or containers rapidly. This version is referred as FMX 8x8H. This vehicle can carry flatracks or containers with various military supplies and cargo, as well as various specialized bodies. It takes around 30 seconds to load or unload the flatrack or container. Currently containers form the backbone of military logistics. Other militarized version of this heavy truck are also available.

The Volvo FMX 8x8 can also tow trailers and heavy artillery pieces.

The Volvio FMX series trucks are primarily intended for logistical applications. These trucks can transport large quantities of various loads to frontline troops. Even though these trucks have some degree of cross-country mobility, these are mainly intended to be used on hard surface roads. The Volvo FMX series vehicles lack cross-country mobility of purpose-designed tactical military trucks.

Cab of the Volvo FMX 8x8 accommodates driver and co-driver. The cab provides additional space for stowage, which can be converted into a sleeper berth. There is a roof hatch for emergency, exit, observation, or firing. Add-on armor kit can be fitted for the cab for operation in combat theater or hotspot areas.

The militarized Volvo FMX 8x8 uses the same driveline and chassis components as its commercial version. It makes maintenance and servicing easier. Also automotive components are readily available.

The FMX 8x8 is proposed with a turbocharged diesel engine, developing 540 hp. Other engine options are also available. Engine is mated to an automatic gearbox. A recovery winch can be fitted.

The Kian X600 is an Iranian heavy equipment transporter. It is a rebadged and militarized version of the Volvo FMX 8x8 tractor truck. It was first publicly revealed in 2021. Most likely that Iran acquired commercial Volvo FMX tractor trucks and modified them for military Use.
