The UAZ-469 is a Soviet 4x4 light utility vehicle. Its development commenced in 1961. It was specially designed to fulfill military roles. The first prototype was completed in 1962. However its production commenced only in 1973. It replaced in production the previous GAZ-69. The UAZ-469 was widely used by the Soviet military, as well as civil operators. This vehicle was exported to around 70 countries worldwide. Over 2 000 000 of these light utility vehicles were produced. An updated variant of this off-road vehicle with some improvements is still produced in Russia. It is known as UAZ Hunter. Currently it is the only vehicle of its class, in service with the Russian Army. Russian Army also uses a GAZ Tigr, but it is a much larger and heavier vehicle.

The UAZ-469 is a robust off-road vehicle, that is simple in design and technology. Its simplicity allows for easy maintenance and repairs. Vehicle has an open-topped body with a soft canvas cover and detachable door tops. It is a very capable 4x4 vehicle, which can drive on any terrain.

The UAZ-469 has a payload capacity of 800 kg. This vehicle provides seating for the driver, plus 6 passengers with 100 kg of cargo, or alternatively one passenger and 600 kg of cargo. It can also tow trailers or light artillery pieces on cross-country terrain with a maximum weight of 850 kg.

Vehicle is powered by commercially available UMZ-452MI 2.45-liter petrol engine, developing 72 hp. A diesel engine is also available. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel-drive. Civilian version of the UAZ-469 was not as capable off-road as the military version.

Variants

UAZ-3151, improved and redesignated version produced since 1985. It is powered by new UMZ-414 and UMZ-417 engines, developing 80 and 92 hp respectively. Maximum road speed is 110-115 km/h. The UAZ-31514 has a fully-enclosed metal roof.

UAZ-3153 is a long-wheelbase version. This version has larger rear cargo area and larger bench seats. It can carry driver, plus 8 passengers.

UAZ Hunter is the current version, produced since 2003. It replaced in production the UAZ-3151. The Hunter has some minor improvements. It was planned that its production will be stopped in 2018.

Recently some military versions of this utility vehicle with extended wheelbase were developed. One of them was intended for Russian airborne troops and accommodates 11 passengers, including the driver.

UAZ-3132 Gusar, or UAZ Gusar, is a dedicated special forces version. It can be seen as a fast attack vehicle. It has a long wheelbase and a hardtop body. This vehicle is fitted with Toyota's V6 petrol engine, developing 203 hp. Engine is mated with LandRover's manual gearbox. Maximum road speed is around 130-150 km. Interestingly it looses in terms of off-road performance to the standard civilian UAZ Hunter, mainly due to increased weight and modified suspension. Original drive shaft and rear axle of the UAZ Hunter could not coupe the Toyota's V6 engine power. The UAZ Gusar carries some armor around the engine bay. There is a large roof hatch with a ring mount for various weapons. It be armed with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, plus additional 7.62 mm general-purpose machine gun, or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher. Two soldiers can use these weapons simultaneously. This vehicle is in service with the Russian army. It is used by airborne troops, and possibly, some other units.
