The Saurer 6DM is a Swiss military truck. It was developed in the late 1970s by Adolft Saurer company, to meet requirements of the Swiss Army. The Saurer 6DM has a 4x4 configuration. It was developed alongside the 10DM model with 6x6 configuration. Both models shared a common cab, engine, transmission, and many other components. The first prototype was completed in 1978. Initially this military truck was known as Saurer D250MF, however its designation was soon changed to 6DM. By 1981 both 4x4 and 6x6 versions were tested by the Swiss Army and eventually adopted to service. Production commenced soon after and ceased in 1986 with a total of 800 Saurer 6DM trucks delivered to the Swiss military. This truck was never exported outside Switzerland. In the early 1980s the Adolf Saurer company, which produced these trucks, was acquired by Daimler-Benz. Eventually this truck production facility was closed. Currently these military trucks are being gradually withdrawn from service.

The Swiss Saurer 6DM resembles a German MAN KAT 1 military truck with 4x4 configuration, which was adopted by the West German Army a couple of years earlier. It was a purpose-designed military vehicle, that can carry loads over difficult terrain and can withstand heavy.

A baseline version of the Saurer 6DM is a troop/cargo carrier. Number in the designation denotes maximum payload capacity of 6 000 kg. The cargo area can be covered with removable bows and canvas cover. This military truck can also tow trailers and artillery pieces.

Cab of this truck is made of steel. It accommodates driver and 2 passengers. Separated windscreens were designed for easier replacement. Also these were installed vertically in order to minimize light reflections. There is a roof hatch.

This military truck is fitted by a rather powerful Saurer D4KT 12 L turbocharged diesel engine, developing 250 hp. The chassis is semi-flexible with independent suspension. Interestingly the front and rear axles are interchangeable. Out of 800 produced, a total of 250 trucks were fitted with winches, though remaining 550 trucks had no winch.

Variants

Saurer 10DM is a larger version with 6x6 configuration. It was also developed in the late 1970s alongside the 6DM. The first prototype was completed in 1978. Initially this military truck was known as Saurer D3000MF, however it was subsequently redesignated as the 10DM. Both models share a common cab and many other components. It was adopted by the Swiss Army in the early 1980s, alongside the 6DM. A total of 400 of these trucks were produced.
