Recently a new upgrade package for the Leopard 2A4 has been revealed. It has been developed by the Swiss RUAG company. This upgrade package has been developed as a private venture and is aimed to meet a possible Swiss Army requirement. Swiss Army currently operates over 300 Pz 87 Leo main battle tanks. It is a license-built version of the German Leopard 2A4 with some minor modifications. The RUAG upgrade package is also aimed at export customers. A demonstrator vehicle has been revealed in 2013.

The Leopard 2 is still in service with a number of countries and is used in large numbers, so the market for upgrades remains substantial. This new upgrade package offers improvements in armor protection and fire control system. The RUAG upgrade is broadly similar to the latest German and Turkish developments, such the Leopard 2A7, Revolution and Leopard 2 Next Generation. Upgraded tanks are more suited for urban warfare and low-intensity conflicts, as well as for tank battles in open terrain.

The tank has improved overall protection. It is fitted with new modular composite armor package. Armor modules can be tailored to provide enhanced protection against specific threat. Damaged modules can be easily replaced in field conditions. Upgraded tanks are less vulnerable to direct hits, anti-tank missiles, RPG rounds, mines and IEDs. Vehicle also received new sensors such as sniper detection sensor and laser warning receiver.

Upgraded tanks retain a 120 mm smoothbore gun of the Pz 87/Leopard 2A4. This gun is loaded manually. It can fire all standard NATO 120 mm tank rounds.

Secondary armament consists of coaxial 7.5 mm machine gun and remotely controlled 12.6 mm machine gun, mounted on the roof. These are typical calibers, used by the Swiss military. Remotely controlled weapon station is operated from within the vehicle and allows to engage enemy targets without the risk for the crew.

This tank has a an upgraded fire control system with hunter-killer capability. Commander uses new 360 periscope with thermal imager. The tank is fitted with navigation and battlefield management systems.

This MBT is operated by a crew of four, including commander, gunner, loader and driver.

Upgraded tank also retains its powerplant. It is powered by an MTU MB-837 Ka501 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 500 hp. Vehicle is powered with auxiliary power unit, which powers all systems when the main engine is turned off.
