In 2015 Israel ordered a total of 4 Sa'ar 6 class corvettes from Germany. Although almost universally identified with Israel, the Sa'ar 6 class corvette were in fact constructed in Germany and are based on Braunschweig class design. This is Germany's newest class of ocean-going corvettes. Though modifications were made to the design in order to fit Israeli weapons and sensors.  The first warship of the class, Magen, was delivered in 2020. Remaining 3 corvettes were planned to be delivered in 2021. Currently these are the largest and most heavily-armed warships in service with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). These new warships will operate alongside the older Sa'ar 5 class corvettes. The Sa'ar 5 class warships were built in the United States and have been around since the mid 1990s and will likely remain in service well into foreseeable future.

The Sa'ar 6 class corvettes are significantly larger than the older Sa'ar 5 class warships. These are the most powerful and advanced warships, used by Israel. The new Sa'ar 6 class corvettes carry significantly more missiles than the previous Sa'ar 5 class corvettes. Also the new corvettes have reduced radar cross section. The new warships will provide Israel with a major boost

The Sa'ar 6 class corvettes are armed with a single OTO Melara 76 mm naval gun. This dual-purpose gun can engage surface targets, warships, air targets, and even incoming missiles. Ammunition includes armor-piercing, incendiary and fragmentation. This gun can also launch guided rounds that are marketed as capable of destroying maneuvering anti-ship missiles. Also there are 2 Typhoon remotely-controlled weapon stations armed with 25 mm cannons.

Primary anti-ship armament is provided by Gabriel Mk. V anti-ship missiles. Each Sa'ar 6 class corvette carries 16 of these missiles.

There is a 32-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS) for Barak 8 air defense missiles. These are medium- and long-range air defense missiles and can engage air threats at ranges of over 70 km.

There is also a 20-cell C-Dome missile defense system. It is a naval version of the Iron Dome. This system was designed to protect warships against anti-ship missiles and saturated attacks. It uses Tamir interceptor missiles.

Anti-submarine capability is provided by two 324 mm torpedo launchers.

There is a landing spot and a hangar for a single SH-60 Seahawk multi-mission naval helicopter.

The Sa'ar 6 class corvettes are powered by Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion system. It integrates two MTU diesel engines. Power is delivered to 2 propellers. Maximum speed is around 26 knots.

Construction cost of a single Sa'ar 6 class corvette is around $480 million.
