   In 2000, Iran had two separate missile programs. A liquid-fuel medium-range missile development program aimed on targeting the threats in a possible war with Israel, which was pursued by increasing the range of these missiles. The second one was to develop short-range solid-fuel missiles to counter possible US threats around Iran. For this reason, the accuracy was highly considered in this program.

   After a short period of time, both programs met their prerequisites. The liquid-fuel missiles had enough range to target Israel, even when fired from the central areas of Iran. At the same time the short-range solid-fuel missiles were accurate enough to hit any kind of targets. So both programs were pursued with different goals. Once these goals were reached Iranian researchers focused on increasing accuracy of the medium-range liquid-fuel missiles and increasing the range of short-range solid-fuel missiles.

   So when the second generation of Iran's Fateh-110 short-range ballistic missiles was developed the main goals were to increase its range and payload. The original Fateh-110 was adopted back in 2002. Since its introduction Iran developed numerous improved versions of this short-range ballistic missile, including Khalij-e Fars, Hormuz, etc. These first generation missiles had a range of around 300 km. The second generation missiles use a detachable warhead (rerentry vehicle).

   The first generation missile that was fired would hit the target completely. By abandoning this design and adding the detachable warhead the range of missile was greatly increased. This led to the creation of the 2nd generation of this missile, known as Fateh-313  (Conqueror-313). It was first unveiled in 2015. As the name implies, this missile was an upgraded version of the Fateh-110. The new missile had a range of 500 km and was made entirely of carbon fiber. Externally it looked like the previous versions with four control fins at the top, four stabilizing fins at the end, along with four other fins. The difference was that after traveling some distance the upper part of the Fateh-313 with four control fins and the warhead would separate and continuing the way on its own.

   Thanks to this new design, not only the missile warhead was capable of flying faster toward the target, but it also gained more range by losing weight. The missile control unit with four control fins remained attached to the warhead, and the accuracy wasn't reduced comparing to previous versions. As a result the missile could carry similar warhead with 200 km more range, while having pinpoint accuracy similar to that of the very last Fateh-110 versions.

   Following this design another missile was built. The Zulfiqar was named after a legendary sword. This missile was launched 1 year after the launch of the Fateh-313. The main goal was to increase the range of the Fateh-313 even further. This time the new missile was about 1.2 meters longer. Also its guidance system was smaller and was transferred towards the tip of the missile. This allowed to reduce the length of the detachable warhead. Furthermore speed of the missile increased even further.

   The Zulfiqar was the first Fateh series missile to have a hypersonic speed of about Mach 6.5 (8 000 km/h). Also it was the first one to use maneuverable reentry vehicle. Its reentry vehicle had the ability to correct its path after separation. It could also perform some maneuvers. This allowed to avoiding being hit by air defense systems and anti-ballistic missile systems.

   Shortly afterwards, a newer version of the Fateh-313 was unveiled. The new Dezful missile was named after a City in Iran that was almost completely destroyed by Iraqi missile attacks during Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). It had nearly same dimensions as the Zulfiqar, though it had a number of advancements. Despite the same length and diameter, the missile had 300 km more range. Although by 2020 most of the specifications were classified but it was clear that this missile is using much more advanced solid-fuel propellant and also has a more powerful engine. This gave the missile about 30 percent more range compare to previous Fateh-110 series missiles with similar dimensions.

   The Dezful has a range of 1 000 km. It carries a 600 or 700 kg warhead and has a CEP of 5 meters. This hypersonic missile can dive toward its targets at a speed of Mach 7 (8 643 kim/h). First launched in 2019, this missile is so far the most advanced and has the longest range of the second generation Fateh-110 missiles. It is claimed that the Dezful also uses a warhead with twice the destructive power. This could be an indication that this missile can carry more payload or it uses more advanced explosives. The Dezful demonstrates Iranian progress in terms of ballistic missile development. This missile clearly uses all advancements of Iranian missile industry, including engine parts, guidance systems, structure materials, fuel, warhead and ect.

   The Fateh-313 missile can by carried and launched by first generation launchers, based on 6x6 wheeled chassis. However Zufiqar and Dezful use their own launcher vehicles with 8x8 configuration version. The launcher vehicle can carry 2 missiles at once.

   Originally designed to deal with threats around Iran, the Dezful missile covers significant areas in the Middle East. It can even hit some parts of Israel's territory without the need for liquid-fuel medium-range ballistic missiles.

   During the past decade the Fateh-110 series missiles were actively used in conflicts. Officially at least 20 missiles were launched toward targets.

   In 2020 Iran launched a number of Fateh-313 and Qiam ballistic missiles against airbases in Iraq where US troops were stationed. At least 6 of these missiles were reportedly Fateh-313. These missiles penetrated the US air defense systems and hit their designated targets. According to satellite imagery some of these missiles had a CEP of only 2-3 meters. This shows that these missiles are even more accurate than the official claims. This is a good indication that Iran managed to develop effective and deadly ballistic missiles.

   Interestingly these Iranian missiles are produced in underground facilities. In 2020 Iran has built a third underground plant for the production of missiles.
