The Type 88-2 is a modified version of the North Korean Type 88. This assault rifle is often referred as the Type 88-2, though it might not be its actual designation. The most notable difference from the baseline Type 88 is a different skeletal metal stock, which folds over the top of the weapon. This weapon is in service since around 2010. So far this assault rifle was not exported outside North Korea.

The Type 88-2 is a gas operated, selective fire weapon. Its design is similar to that of the Soviet AK-74. It is chambered for the same Soviet 5.45x39 mm ammunition. The Type 88-2 assault rifle is more accurate than the older North Korean Type 68, chambered for a Soviet 7.62x39 mm round, however it is not as accurate as a US M16 or most other Western assault rifles. Also the 5.45x39 mm ammunition is inferior to a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm round.

The Type 88-2 is a durable and reliable weapon, that withstands all abuse soldier can throw at it. It won't jam or misfire in worst conditions possible. Also it has reliable extraction even with dirty chamber and cases. Main drawbacks of the Type 88-2 are poor balance and ergonomics.

This assault rifle is easy to use and to maintain. It can be field stripped in one minute without using any tools.

From an engineering and industrial standpoint the Type 88-2 is a low-tech weapon. This assault rifle is simple in design and technology. It can be easily produced in large numbers by the North Korean industry.

A combined safety and fire mode selector switch has three positions for "safe", "semi-auto", and "full-auto". In "safe" position it locks both the bolt group and trigger and also serves as a dust cover.

This North Korean assault rifle is typically fed from polymer magazines, that resemble new Russian 30-round magazines. Also there is another unusual helical magazine, which looks like a larger version of the Russian Bizon SMG magazine. Similar magazine is also used by Chinese CF-05 submachine gun. Helical magazines were originally patented by Calico company and were used on their submachine guns, notably Calico M950. Such magazine allows to carry a higher number of rounds without the notable increase in size of the weapon. However it is the first time when a helical magazine is used on production assault rifle. For some reason these high-capacity magazines are not used on other North Korean assault rifles.

Stock of the Type 88-2 is rather unusual and folds over the top of the weapon. When the stock is folded it does not obstructs sights, charging handle or trigger.

Early version of this assault rifle had a wooden foregrip. Though later it was replaced by black or brown polymer foregrip.

This assault rifle has got simple AK-style iron sights. Effective range of fire is 500 meters.

The Type 88-2 can mount a knife-bayonet. It can also mount a 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher, that is similar to a Soviet GP-25.

Compact assault rifle with a shorter barrel. Its front sight is mounted on the gas block. Also this weapon has got a different muzzle brake.

North Korean assault rifle with integrated grenade launcher. This weapon was modeled after a South Korean K11. It was first publicly reveled in 2017. It is based around a modified Type 88 series assault rifle. This weapon is used by the North Korean military.
