The SIG Sauer P228 is a compact version of a popular P226 pistol. The original P226 is one of the most popular service pistols. It is widely used by the military, police and security forces around the world. Its compact version, the P228 is produced since 1988. As its predecessor this pistol is also popular with various law enforcement agencies that require compact and unobtrusive handgun, smaller than the full-size pistol. It is also popular among civilian customers. Furthermore in the early 1990s the SIG Sauer P228 has been adopted by the US military as the M11. It was issued to Military Police and some other units.

This pistol has a shorter slide, barrel and grip than the full-size SIG Sauer P226. Also shape of the P228 is slightly less angular and more suited for concealed carrying.

This pistol is available chambered only for 9x19 mm Parabellum ammunition. This pistol has a short recoil system with a locked breech operation.

The SIG Sauer P228 comes with a double action or double action only trigger. This pistol has a built-in firing pin safety. There are no manual safeties. There is a decocking lever at the left side of the frame. It is worth noting that double action only version has no decocker.

Like the P226, the compact P228 is available with a standard aluminum, or stainless steel frame. Version with aluminum frame is slightly lighter.

The P228 is fed from a double-stack 13-round capacity magazines. It can also use 15- or 20-round magazines of the full-size SIG Sauer P226. Magazine release button is reversible.

The P228 proved to be a durable, reliable and well-made weapon.

SIG Sauer P229 is another compact derivative of the P226.  It was developed specially for the US market to supplement and then replace the SIG Sauer P228. It was also available in 9x19 mm, however other chambering, including .40 S&W and .357 SIG were added. Furthermore this pistol can be adapted to any of these three calibers by simply switching the barrel and returning spring. Technically the P229 is similar to the P228, except the heavier slide. This feature is necessary because the P229 uses more powerful ammunition. This pistol is produced in the USA.
