The Liebherr Fahrzeugkran Leicht (FKL), or Light Mobile Crane was specially designed to meet requirements of the Bundeswehr (German military). Sometimes it is referred as the FKL 10 due to its lifting capacity of 10 t. Production order was awarded to Liebherr in 1990 after severe competition. A total of 251 units were delivered to the German military alongside 208 larger and more powerful Liebherr FKM cranes with lifting capacity of 20 t. Deliveries of the FKL began in 1991 and were completed in 1994. This crane is used by all branches of the German military, including army, navy and air force.

This mobile crane is typically used by engineer, repair and logistics units. It can be found in military depots and repair facilities. Its primary role is maintenance work on vehicles. The Liebherr FKL can be used for all kinds of other light crane work, including construction tasks, handling of missiles in containers, loading and unloading of trucks and boats, handling collapsible floating bridges, recovery of damaged, stuck or overturned vehicles, towing and salvage operations and for variety of other tasks.

This crane has a telescopic 13 m long boom. Maximum lifting capacity is 10 t. At its maximum reach the crane can lift loads with a maximum weight of 2.4 t. This crane does not requires any counterweight.

There is a hydraulic recovery winch with 85 m of cable. It has a pulling capacity of 8 t at single stand and 20 t at double strand. The recovery winch can be mounted either to the front or to the rear of the vehicle. It can be also used for self-recovery.

Unusual feature of this crane that it has a cargo platform at the rear. It can be used to carry vehicle engines and all kinds of other loads with a maximum weight of 10 t.

The Liebherr FKL can be used for towing operations. It can tow broken down vehicles in partial or complete rolling condition with a maximum weight of up to 6.5 t. For this role the crane carries towing bars. So this machine can recover and tow various utility vehicles and military trucks. This concept of a mobile crane which has a secondary function of a recovery vehicle is specific to the German army. Alternatively the FKL can tow braked trailers with a maximum weight of 22 t.

There is a large 2-man driving cab and a crane cab, which controls all the lifting operations.

Although this machine was specially created for military use it has a number of components from Liebherr commercial models. This crane is powered by a KHD F8L513 diesel engine, developing 256 hp. It is mated to a ZF transmission with 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds. This crane can operate off road. It has all-wheel drive configuration with differential locks and large off-road tyres. Furthermore ground clearance is adjustable. Vehicle is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. This crane can ford water obstacles up to 1.2 m deep.

Both axles of this crane are steerable, though steering of the the rear axle is engaged only at low speeds.

Variants

Liebherr FKM (Fahrzeugkran Mittel or Medium Mobile Crane), is a larger and more capable machine with 6x6 configuration. It has a lifting capacity of 20 t. Its rear cargo platform has a 16 t capacity. This mobile crane was also adopted by the German military. A total of 208 units were delivered. This crane has been exported to the Netherlands (27 units). Some of these cranes are fitted with armored cabs.
