The Caterpillar D5 is a small commercial bulldozer, designed and produced in the United States. It first appeared in 1939, but the original version was built in limited numbers. Only 46 of these original dozers were ever built. The D5 series was reintroduced in 1967. With constant improvements the D5 series bulldozers are produced to this day and new versions continue to emerge. Currently the D5 is among the smallest bulldozers produced by the Caterpillar company. The smallest are the D3 series dozers, while the largest are D11 series dozers. For a number of years the Caterpillar D5 series dozers were used by the US Army, until these was replaced by an a newer M105 DEUCE combat earthmover, which was specially designed for military use and was much more suitable for its role. The Caterpillar does not manufacture any special militarized version of the D5 bulldozer. However after some modifications, such as flat military paint, blackout lights, transport provisions, keyless ignition and other, this earthmoving machine can be used for military applications.

The Caterpillar D5 follows the lines of other Caterpillar bulldozers. It is equipped with a detachable blade. Various blades can be mounted. The most common is a universal blade with side wings, which allows to carry more material. Also there are straight blades without side wings for fine grading, angle blades, two-way blades and so on. This machine can be fitted with a rake attachment at the rear. The D5 bulldozer can also perform light recovery and towing operations. It can tow vehicles with a maximum weight of around 20 t. In military service the Caterpillar D5 series bulldozers are typically assigned to combat engineer companies.

The Caterpillar D5 bulldozer performs light excavation tasks in support of various mobility, counter-mobility and survivability missions. It can dig pits and positions for armored vehicles, troops or  artillery systems. It can dig anti-tank ditches and create other obstacles. This bulldozer can clear obstacles, demolish structures and open routes. Also the D5 can be also used to perform other typical engineering tasks. If required this bulldozer can recover stuck combat vehicles.

Due to its low mobility the D5 bulldozers must be transported on trailers from one mission site to another.

Variants

Caterpillar D5 is an early production version. It was introduced in 1967. Since its introduction these bulldozers were constantly improved and updated.

Caterpillar D5B is a version produced since 1977. It was used by the US military.

Caterpillar D5H is a version with an elevated sprocket. It was introduced in 1985. Due to its elevated sprocket this machine was more durable and efficient during earthmoving. Due to its elevated nature the operator's station provided excellent observation of the blade and rear of the machine.

Caterpillar D5N is a version used by the British Armed Forces. A total of 35 units were obtained by the British MoD. These replaced in service Medium Crawler Tractor (Caterpillar D6) and Heavy Crawler Tractor (Liebherr PR 742B) that are much larger.

Caterpillar D5K is a more recent version.

Caterpillar D5K (Series II) is a current production version. It is powered by a 4.4-liter Caterpillar C4.4 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 92 or 104 hp.
