The 2S40 Floks (phlox) is a new Russian self-propelled mortar system. There is a trend in Russia to call their artillery systems after flowers. It seems that this artillery system was aimed both at a possible Russian Army requirement and export customers. The Floks is being offered to the Russian Army as a replacement of towed artillery systems of similar caliber. It was first publicly revealed in 2016. Trials of this artillery system are planned to be completed in 2021.

The truck-mounted artillery system combines features of mortar and howitzer. It can deliver direct and indirect fire. Russia is among the few countries that operate such unique artillery systems. Furthermore this vehicle is new in concept, as it is the first truck-mounted system of this type.

The Floks is based on the chassis of a new Ural-63704-0010 6x6 truck. The gun uses some components of the 2S31 Vena self-propelled mortar system.

This 120 mm artillery system is compatible with all munitions, developed for the Soviet/Russian 120 mm combined gun/mortar systems, such as 2S9 Nona-S. It can fire various munitions, including HEAT, HE-FRAG, and smoke. Maximum range of fire with these munitions is 13 km. Also this artillery system can fire any 120 mm mortar mines. Maximum range using mortar mines is 7.5 km. For precision attacks against armored targets the Floks can use Kitolov-2M precision guided munitions. These have a range of 10 km. So overall it is a versatile weapon, which can be used as a howitzer or mortar. A total of 80 rounds of ammunition are carried onboard. 28 rounds are ready to use. More rounds can be carried by escorting truck.

Maximum rate of fire is up to 8 rounds per minute when firing HE-FRAG rounds and up to 10 rounds per minute, when firing mines.

The Floks has a modern fire control system, which promises good fire accuracy. This artillery system can exchange firing data with an associated command post vehicle. Also it can select targets and operate entirely independently.

This artillery system is intended to operate close to the frontline. So vehicle is fitted with an armored crew cab. It protects the crew from small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Cab's floor withstands blasts equivalent to 2 kg of TNT. Vehicle is also fitted with NBC protection system.

Vehicle is fitted with a remotely-controlled weapon station, armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun. It is used for self-defense. Also there are firing ports provided for the crew to fire their individual weapons.

This artillery system is operated by a crew of 4 men. It takes a couple of minutes to prepare the Floks for firing. This artillery system can briefly redeploy in order to avoid counter-battery fire.

The Floks is powered by a YaMZ-652 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 440 hp. It is a Russian license-produced version of Renault dCi 11 engine. Though some modifications were made to improve performance of this engine in order to increase its horsepower from 412 to 440 hp. Engine is mated to a manual transmission. This truck uses Hungarian Raba axles. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel drive and is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. This vehicle has good cross-country mobility over difficult terrain, such as as sand, snow and mud. With preparation vehicle can ford water obstacles up to 1.75 m deep.
