The original Toyota Land Cruiser is a popular commercial 4x4 pickup which was built in impressive numbers. It made its name for durability, reliability and off-road performance. Even though it is not a dedicated military vehicle, it is widely used by various military and paramilitary units, non-governmental organizations and militant groups from all over the world. Some companies, such as Australian Multidrive Technology, Australian Patrol Vehicles, or Emirati NSV Auto offer custom built 6x4 and 6x6 versions of the Land Cruiser. These vehicles are based on models 78 and 79 and have extended chassis and an extra axle. These 3-axle vehicles are being proposed for military users, as well as civil customers.

The custom built Land Cruisers with 6x6 configuration can carry more payload and have improved off-road performance. The concept of creating a 6x6 version of a popular 4x4 vehicle is not new. Since the late 1980s Australia used a fleet of Land Rover 110 Heavy Duty trucks with 6x6 configuration. These vehicles proved themselves well and since 2012 were replaced by the new Mercedes-Benz G-class vehicles with 6x6 configuration.

The Australian Multidrive Technology offers Land Cruiser 6x6 pickups with a 2-door, or 4-door cabs. These have a payload capacity of around 2 000 - 3 300 kg. It can tow trailers with a maximum weight of around 3 500 kg.

The Australian Patrol Vehicles offers an open top long-range patrol vehicle, intended for special forces. A key part of the design is that this vehicle carries fuel for a range of 2 500 km. Food and water supplies allow the crew of 3 to operate for up to 21 days. This vehicle can operate in desserts for prolonged periods of times without resupply. The rear cargo compartment has a built-in kitchen and various stowage areas for ammunition, weapons, tools and spares. There are fold-jump seats for 3 additional passengers. This vehicle can be armed with a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.

The Emirati NSV Auto offers a similar long-range patrol vehicle for special forces.

The Land Cruisers with 6x6 configuration can be uparmored. Due their improved payload these vehicles can carry armor without the loss of mobility.

These 6x6 Land Cruisers are powered by a 4-liter petrol engine, developing 398 hp. There is also a 4.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 202 hp. This vehicle is available with a choice of 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. These custom built vehicle have good cross-country performance. These machines were developed for rough terrain conditions from the ground up and are able to absorb rough knocks.

Due to their popularity the Land Cruisers can be easily supported in any part of the world. Commercial off-the-shelf automotive parts are readily available.
