The Renault Kerax 4x4 is a heavy logistics truck. It is a militarized version of commercial design, modified to suit military needs. Renault Trucks Defense developed a whole family of militarized Kerax trucks with 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 configurations. Production of this truck family commenced in 1997. Since 2006 an improved version is produced. This military vehicle is in service with France and possibly some other countries.

Various versions of this truck are available. There are models 4x2 or 4x4 configuration. Also there are vehicles with various engines and various wheelbase lengths. Renault proposes Kerax trucks with various degree of militarization. First number in the designation denotes engine horsepower. The second number in the designation denotes gross vehicle weight.

A baseline Kerax 270.19 with 4x2 configuration has a payload capacity of 9 600 kg. This general service truck is fitted with drop-side cargo body and a small crane behind the cab. The cargo area is covered with bows and canvas cover. These logistic trucks are used to carry various heavy cargo, troops, weapons, missiles, shelters, and other specialized military equipment. This military truck can also tow trailers and artillery pieces.

The cab accommodates driver and co-driver. There is a sleeper berth. Also there are versions with extended cabs, that accommodate driver plus up to 5 passengers. The Kerax trucks are available with standard or armored cabs. The armored cab provides protection against small arms fire, artillery shell fragments, landmines and improvised explosive devices. Armored cabs withstand explosions equivalent to 8 kg of TNT. Such trucks with armored cabs are typically used close to the frontline, where there is a high threat of being ambushed.

A ring mount for 7.62-mm or 12.7-mm machine gun is proposed as an option. Vehicle can be even fitted with remotely controlled weapon station.

A baseline Kerax 4x2 is powered by a dCi 11 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 270 hp. It is mated to an 8-speed manual gearbox. The Kerax 4x4 comes with a more powerful a DXi11 engine. This 11-liter unit was originally available in three power outputs, developing 330 hp, 380 hp and 440 hp. In 2009 this engine was updated and became more powerful. Currently it is developing 380 hp, 430 hp and 460 hp. The same engines are used across all range of Renaul Kerax trucks. It is mated to a 16-speed mechanical or 12-speed automatic gearboxes. The 4x2 version operates on hard surface roads, while the 4x4 version has some degree of cross-country mobility. Central tyre inflation system and run-flat tyres are optional.

These military vehicles benefit from low lifecycle costs due to readily available spare parts and automotive components.

The Kerax 4x4 can be airlifted by C-130 Hercules, C-160, of the new A400M military cargo aircraft.
