A new Mercedes-Benz G-class was first publicly revealed in 2018. This vehicle is also referred as the Gelandwagen, G-Wagen, or G-Wagon. Externally this second generation vehicle looks exactly the same as the first generation G-class, that was produced since 1979. So this utilitarian vehicle is now nearly 40 years in production! However despite similar external appearance the new G-class is an entirely new vehicle. It was designed both for civil customers, as well as military operators. It was announced there will be a dedicated military version of this vehicle. However production numbers are likely to be rather humble. Each year only around 4 000-6 000 of these vehicles are being produced both for military and civil customers. Sales of the second generation G-class will begin in 2018-2019.

The original G-class made its reputation for reliability, ruggedness and good off-road mobility. The new Mercedes-Benz G-class was also developed for tough terrain conditions. In fact off-road performance was slightly improved. Also the new vehicle is slightly longer and wider than its predecessor. Furthermore it is 170 kg lighter due to the use of aluminum in its construction. The cabin design is also new.

Payload capacity of the new G-class is around 500- 750 kg, depending on the model. It can also tow light trailers and artillery pieces with a maximum weight of up to 3 500 kg. It is planned that this vehicle will be available in various body styled, including a pickup truck.

This vehicle is available with either diesel or petrol engine. Initially this vehicle (the G550 model) will be offered with a 4-liter V8 twin turbocharged petrol engine, developing 415 hp, and mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. There is also an entry-level G350D model with a new 2.9-liter diesel engine, developing 282 hp, which is also mated to the 9-speed automatic transmission. The new G-class comes as standard with a full-time all-wheel drive. On suitable surfaces the new G-class can climb even 100% slopes. It also has improved fording depth over the original vehicle.
