The original
Mercedes-Benz Axor mid-weight truck was developed to fill the gap
between lighter
Atego and
heavier
Actros models. The Axor was
introduced in 2001. It is a militarized version of commercial truck,
modified to suit military needs. An updated version - the Axor II is
produced since 2004. Former heavier versions of the Atego range were made
part of the Axor range. German Army ordered a total of 1 700 Axor II
trucks. Deliveries commenced in 2008.
Models of
the Axor II range from 1824A to 1833A. This truck has a payload
capacity of 5-7 t, depending on the particular model. Various wheelbase lengths
are available. A standard troop/cargo body is fitted with drop-sides
and drop-tailgate. The cargo area can be covered with bows and
tarpaulin. This military truck can tow trailers and artillery
pieces.
Cab of the
Axor II accommodates driver and up to two passengers. It is tilted
forward for engine access and maintenance. Observation hatch with a
weapon ring can be fitted to the roof.
The Axor II
is powered by 4- or 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines,
developing 238 to 326 hp. Emission reduced engines, that meet EURO 5
emission requirements are available. This military truck has a 4x4
configuration. All vehicle components are of commercial origin. A
central tyre inflation system and self-recovery winch are optional.
With a deep wading kit installed vehicle can ford water obstacles up
to 1.2 m deep. This military truck can be also fitted with a cold
weather kit for operation in extreme climatic conditions.
Variants
Mercedes-Benz Zetros is a bonneted version of the Axor, modified
for off-road use. It is available with 4x4 and
6x6
configurations. The Zetros series trucks are being proposed both for
military and civil operators. The cab can be fitted with various
levels of armor protection. The standard cab can be even replaced
with a completely armored cab, which provides higher level of
protection for the driver and passengers.
