The MAN Category 1 or KAT 1 range includes high mobility tactical trucks with 4x4 (5 t), 6x6 (7 t), and 8x8 (10 t) configurations. They all stem from a West German Army staff requirement drawn up during the early 1960s. The main goal was to design a family of support trucks that could carry loads over rough terrain and could keep up with main battle tanks. Production began in 1976. The first model produced was 8x8. Later 6x6 and 4x4 variants followed. All trucks share a modular design. Ever since then these trucks have rolled off in thousands and by the end of 1984 the German armed forces had accepted over 14 000 units and thousands more have since been exported.

All models share a common cab and many other components including a low torsion chassis frame, axles and suspension. Many components have commercial origins. The end result was a range of powerful multi-purpose trucks that are uncompromisingly military in appearance and function.

The trucks are used for just about any military purpose possible. Load handling systems are frequently used in place of the usual cargo area, handling everything from ammunition flatracks to floating bridge sections. Special applications include carrying telescopic masts and other equipment for the Patriot missile system, and elevating combat platforms for anti-tank missile systems. Recovery and fire/crash tender versions have been produced.

The basic cargo truck has a 10 t payload capacity. Its body is an open all-steel unit and material handling cranes are widely used. It is used to supply combat units with ammunition and fuel. These trucks have a standard NATO towing hitch. These can tow trailers or artillery pieces, even over rough terrain.

On all models the same forward control all-steel cab is used. Windscreens are installed vertically to minimize light reflections. A roof hatch with a machine gun mount was fitted as standard. Optional equipment includes an armored cab.

The 8x8 KAT 1 trucks are powered by a MAN D2866 KFG diesel engine, developing 360 hp. The engine is mounted behind the cab. This feature allowed to reduce overall height. Engine is mated with ZF gearbox, with up to 16 forward and 2 reverse gears. Vehicles have a permanent all-wheel drive. A winch is a standard item.

The US armed forces have used these trucks to support cruise missile units. These were M1001 tractor, M1002 wrecker, M1013 and M1014 tractors. License-built examples of the KAT 1 have been produced in Austria by OAF.

Follow-up of the original KAT 1 was the KAT 1 A1. The A1 8x8 trucks have a 15 t payload capacity. These trucks used more heavy commercial truck components in order to reduce unit price and to keep maintenance costs low. These vehicles can be easily identified by an updated cab. There is even a special wide version (2.9 m) of the 8x8 A1 for carrying shelters and other loads requiring high stability. This chassis is used to carry the Roland and Patriot air defense missiles.

The KAT 1 series trucks later evolved into MAN SX range.
