The Mack
Granite is a commercial vehicle series, designed for construction
application. The commercial Granite was introduced in 2001. Later a
militarized version of this heavy truck appeared. The Mack Granite
is in service with Iraq, and possibly some other countries.
Various
versions of this truck are available. A general troop/cargo carrier
can carry up to 42 troops in the cargo area. This version is fitted
with drop-sides and drop-tailgate. The cargo area can be
covered with bows and canvas. Troop benches can be folded down, when
not in use. This militarized truck
can also tow trailers or artillery pieces with a maximum weight of
27 t.
Other
military versions of the Granite include two various tractor trucks,
wrecker, fuel and water tankers. In 2012 US Army ordered a total of
100 Mack Granite fuel tankers for delivery to Iraqi MoD. First
trucks were expected to be delivered in 2013.
Bonneted cab
of the Granite accommodates driver and one passenger. Sleeper cabs are available.
The highway tractor truck is also available with high-rise sleeper
cab. An armored cab is also
proposed as an option.
The Granite
military trucks are powered by a Mack MP8 13-liter turbocharged
diesel engine. It develops 360, 400, 440, or 520 hp, depending on the
version. Vehicle has limited cross-country mobility due to its
6x4 configuration. This heavy-duty truck has tough construction, but
it is not a purpose-designed tactical vehicle. The Mack Granite is
limited to logistic support operations.
The
M917A3
is a US Army's dump truck with 8x8 configuration, based on the Mack
Granite.
