The M920 tractor truck is a member of the M915 family of vehicles. It was built by AM General corporation. Officially it is referred as Medium Equipment Transporter. It was used to haul semi-trailers with various loads. This truck can operate off-road. Production of the M920 commenced in 1978. It replaced in the US Army service the M123 tractor truck. The M920 was not used to transport main battle tanks. This was done by a contemporary M911 heavy equipment transporter. It was mainly used by engineer units.

The suspension setup was carried over from the M916 tractor truck. However an additional pusher type axle was added. As a result the M920 has a stretched frame with 8x6 configuration. The second axle is lowered when the semi-trailer is loaded in order to equalize load on the rear axles. This axle is normally raised when the truck is running unloaded or without a semi-trailer. Similar chassis with 8x6 configuration was used by M917 dump truck and M919 concrete mixer.

The M920 was used in conjunction with M172A1 (22 600 kg capacity) or M870 (36 200 kg capacity) semi-trailers. There is a winch behind the cab for loading operations. This tractor truck was also used to transport water and fuel tank semi-trailers.

Cab of the M920 has an all-steel construction. It accommodates driver and 1 or 2 passengers. Several companies developed add-on armor kits for the M915 series military trucks. These provided some degree of protection against small arms fire, artillery shell splinters and blasts.

The M920 tractor truck uses the same engine, transmission, transfer box and suspension as the M916. It is powered by a Cummins NTC 400 14-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 400 hp. Unofficially it was known as Big Cam I. It is mated to a Caterpillar semi-automatic gearbox with 16 forward and 2 reverse speeds.
