The M915A5 was developed for the US Army by Daimler Trucks North America. This prime mover was designed to operate in warzones such as Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2009 US Army ordered a total of 1 780 M915A5 trucks. First production vehicles were delivered in 2010. Deliveries were completed in 2012. The new tractor truck replaced older M915A1, A2 and A3 trucks. These tractor trucks are deployed by US Army, army reserve units and National Guard. It tows the army's fleet of semi-trailers and fuel tankers. Its main role is to transport containers, bulk supplies, water and fuel from the ocean ports to division support areas within the theatre of operation. Also these trucks have been exported to Afghanistan.

The M915A5 is a block upgrade of the M915A3 incorporating enhanced suspension and powertrain components. Also it has a number of other upgrades. It is similar to the M916A3 Light Equipment Transporter. It was designed with long-range operations in mind. It also takes considerably less time for repair and maintenance operations. This tractor truck tows M781 and M782 flat-bed semi-trailers, as well as M1062, M967 and M969 tankers. Vehicle haul loads with a maximum weight of 43 t.

The M915A5 has a larger cab than its predecessors. It accommodates driver and co-driver. There is a cab extension for storage of personal equipment and other gear. The cab on some trucks has an integrated armor (A-kit). It provides protection against 7.62x39-mm rounds, artillery shell shrapnel and hand grenade blasts. Add-on armor (B-kit) can be fitted for operation in the combat theatre for a higher level of protection. It includes an external armor and door assist system. The B-kit can be installed in the combat theatre in about eight hours. Armor kits were developed and installed by BAE Systems. These do not reduces vehicle capabilities. It is a part of the US Army's strategy to equip the medium and heavy wheeled tactical vehicles with scalable armor.

The M915A5 line-haul tractor is powered by Detroit Diesel Series 60 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 500 hp. This engine can run on diesel or JP-8 jet fuel. It is mated to an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission. This military truck has a 6x4 configuration. Its operation is limited to hard surface roads only. Vehicle is fitted with collision warning system and rollover stability control system. Vehicle can tow at 104 km/h with full payload.
