The M1151 Enhanced Armament Carrier is an improved model of the M1114 uparmored HMMWV. It is used by the US Army. This vehicle was designed to replace the older HMMWVs, such as M1025A2 and M1114 armored weapon carriers. It it better suited for operation during various military conflicts and peacekeeping operations, as its armor provides some degree of protection of the passengers. The M1151 has heavier chassis and improved engine in order to handle increased weight of add-on armor. Initial contract was awarded for 31 M1151 vehicles. Also there was another contract to install armor kits for these vehicles. The US Army plans to replace the older HMMWVs with this single model in order to reduce maintenance costs.

Basically the M1151 is similar to the previous M1114, that was adopted back in 1996. There are are only some small external differences between the two, that allow to recognize the newer vehicle. It was planned that the M1151 will replace the older M1025, M1026 and M1114 weapon carriers in the US Army service.

The M1151 is a 4-door vehicle, that accommodates driver and 3 passengers. There is an enclosed cargo area at the rear.

Two armor kits are available for this vehicle. The baseline A kit can be factory installed. There is another optional add-on B kit that is bolted on top of the A kit in field conditions. It further improves ballistic protection and provides some degree of protection against mine blasts and improvised explosive devices.

A baseline version of the M1151 has a curb weight of 3 402 kg. However the vehicle weight differs depending on armor configuration. Payload capacity also ranges from 1 515 to 2 313 kg depending on armor configuration. The M1151 can tow trailers and light artillery pieces with a maximum weight of 1 905 kg.

This vehicle was designed as an armament carrier. It has a ring mount on top of the roof and can be equipped with various weapons, including heavy machine guns. The weapon can traverse through 360 degrees. Gunner's protection kit is proposed as an option.

The M1151 is powered by General Engine Products 6.5-liter V8 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 190 hp. The same engine, previously known as Detroit Diesel, was used on the earlier HMMWV series vehicles. Engine is mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel drive.

The M1151 was specially designed to have the same track width as main battle tanks. This feature allows the vehicle to travel in tracks left by main battle battle tanks. The M1151 is fitted with a central tyre inflation system and run-flat tyres. Even with punctured and damaged tyres the M1151 can travel another 48 km at a maximum speed of 48 km/h. Once equipped with a deep wading kit, the M1151 can ford water obstacles up to 1.52 m deep.

The M1151 is airportable and can be paradropped. Furthermore it can be carried underslung by some helicopters.

Variants

M1152 Enhanced Troop/Cargo/Shelter Carrier. It is a 2-door version. It can be used as an utility vehicle, cargo carrier or shelter carrier. It was planned that the M1152 will replace older HMMWV series vehicles in the US Army service, such as the M998, M1038, M1037, M1097A2, and M1113.

M1165 is an uparmored 4-door pickup version. It can be used as command and control, or genera purpose vehicle. It has a payload capacity ranging from 1 011 to 2 245 kg, depending on the armor configuration.

M1167 TOW variant, fitted with TOW antitank guided missile launcher. It was planned to replace an older M966 TOW missile carrier.

There are also two ambulance versions. One of them is a 4-door ambulance, that can transport 2 litters. Another is a 2-door ambulance, that can transport 4 litters.
