The Kynos Aljaba 8x8 tank transporter was developed by the Kynos SA. Development commenced in 1982. It was aimed to meet requirements of the Spanish Army. Development of this heavy equipment transporter was partially funded by the Spanish MoD. In 1985 this tank transporter was trialed by the Spanish Army. First vehicles were delivered to Spanish Army and Spanish Marines in 1987. Only 10 of these tank transporters were delivered to the Spanish armed forces. It has been exported to South Africa (72 units). The Kynos company is no longer operational. Since 2003 all assets, technology and orders of the Kynos SA were taken over by Group SPA company and the same truck is produced under SHE brand.

The Kynos Aljaba tank transporter was designed to carry and retrieve tanks with a maximum weight of 60 t. It is used in conjunction with a two-axle semi-trailer. Vehicle has good cross-country mobility and can operate off-road. Its flexible chassis is resistant to stress, when travelling over uneven terrain.

Vehicle is equipped with two 25 000 kg winches for loading and recovery operations. These winches normally operate to the rear. But one of the winches may be routed forward and used for self-recovery.

The Kynos Aljaba prime mover has armored cab, which provides accommodation for driver plus four passengers. So it can carry entire crew of the combat vehicle.

Vehicle is powered by a Deutz BF12L513FC 19-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 525 hp. Engine is located behind the cab. It is mated to a 16-speed manual transmission. Vehicle has a full time all-wheel drive. Both front axles are being steered. Unusually this vehicle lacks central tyre inflation system. However there is an air compressor on each side of the vehicle for tyre inflation.

Variants

SHE Cavallo, a South African version of the Kynos Aljaba. It has a number of differences. Vehicle is fitted with South African cab, that is protected against mine blasts. In South African National Defense Forces the Cavallo is widely used as a tank recovery vehicle. The SANDF employ several variants of this vehicle for other roles. There is also a Skimmel heavy recovery vehicle, Zebra maintenance and repair vehicle, Kameelperd artillery command post with radar. Also there are some other variants. A total of 72 Cavallo vehicles and its variants are in service with SANDF.
