The SRM-1 Kozak light protected vehicle was developed by Praktika scientific and production association as a private venture. This company produces civilian armored vehicles and security systems for banks. Development of this vehicle commenced in 2008. First prototype was completed and publicly revealed in 2009. So far the Kozak received no production orders.

This light protected vehicle is proposed as a replacement for ageing UAZ-469 and UAZ-3151 light utility vehicles, used by Ukrainian Army. It can be used as reconnaissance, command or special operations vehicle. It can also find its use during peacekeeping operations. The Kozak is also being proposed for police use. A non-armored civilian version of this vehicle is also being proposed.

The Kozak is based on IVECO Daily 4x4 chassis. Body is made of welded steel armor. Vehicle has a diversified level of protection with a protective capsule for the soldiers. It provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle has a double V-shaped hull. It withstands blasts equivalent to 3 kg of TNT. Vehicle is also fitted with blast-resistant seats.

Baseline version of the Kozak has four doors, plus the rear doors. It accommodates driver and four passengers. It can be used as patrol or reconnaissance vehicle. Also there is a two-door fully enclosed version that accommodates driver plus 9 troops. It can be used as command vehicle, armored ambulance, or troop carrier. There is also a two-door pickup truck. It accommodates driver and co-driver and can be used to carry various military cargo.

This light protected vehicle can tow trailers or artillery pieces with a maximum weight of 4 t.

The Kozak can be armed with a roof-mounted 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun, or alternatively 30 mm or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher. It can be also fitted with anti-tank guided missiles. In 2013 a missile carrier with Skif anti-tank guided missiles was revealed.

Vehicle is powered by IVECO 3-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 176 hp. It complies with EURO IV emission requirements. Engine is mated to ZF 6-speed manual gearbox. The Kozak has an all-wheel drive. It is fitted with run-flat tyres. Vehicle also has a self-recovery winch.

This light protected vehicle can be airlifted by Mi-8 helicopter, An-72 tactical transport aircraft, or other similar aircraft. A larger An-70 can lift three of these vehicles at once.

In 2014 a version of the Kozak appeared, based on refurbished chassis of GAZ-66 light utility truck. This version of the Kozak is much cheaper to produce and maintain, as the GAZ-66 truck is widely used by Ukrainian Army.
