In the mid-2000s German special forces had a requirement for a long-range patrol vehicle, that could be airlifted by CH-47 Chinook. To meet this requirement the Special Operations Vehicle, or SOV, was developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) in cooperation with Bremach. It is intended for long-range reconnaissance and special operations. The Special Operation Vehicle was first revealed in 2014. It is being proposed for various customers.

The SOV is an open-topped vehicle. In concept it is similar to the British Supacal Jackal. The emphasis is stressed on firepower and visibility rather than protection. Hull floor it is protected against landmines and IED blasts. Vehicle has some level of ballistic protection. It has great cross-country mobility and exploits speed and mobility in order to avoid contact with enemy. Also it has a number of smoke grenade dischargers.

Vehicle is operated by a crew of four. It has three weapon mounts. It can use various weapons, such as 12.7-mm machine gun, 40-mm automatic grenade launcher from the main mount and 7.62-mm or 5.56-mm machine guns from auxiliary front and rear mounts.

The SOV has a modular design. It can be quickly reconfigured depending on mission requirements. This vehicle has a capyload capacity of 2 500 kg and can carry up to 6 troops.

This vehicle uses the Italian Bremach heavy-duty chassis. The SOV is powered by IVECO 3-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 168 hp. It is well suited to desert terrain. It has a range of up to 900 km on internal fuel. Vehicle is fitted with a self-recovery winch. The SOV is air transportable internally by CH-47 or CH-53 or helicopters. It takes less than two minutes to fold the roll-bar prepare the vehicle for airlifting. Once the bar is folded the vehicle height is reduced from 2.63 m to 1.87 m. The weapons stay mounted during transport, so the vehicle is combat ready when landed.

It is likely that there will be more products, jointly developed by Bremach and Krauss-Maffei Wegmann on the same 4x4 chassis.
