The new Kia
armored truck is a member of the Kia Medium Tactical Vehicle (MTV)
family. Currently this truck is available in 6x6 configuration.
However it seems that a 4x4 and 8x8 versions are being developed. It
is a next-generation vehicle, that might enter service with the
South Korean army. It
seems that this armored truck is also being proposed for export
customers.
The Kia MTV
armored truck is intended for operation in frontline. Also it
improves support of rapid deployment units. Vehicle has
modular design and can be configured to suit many roles.
Armored cab
and body protects crew and cargo from small arms fire and artillery
shell splinters. Some level of protection is provided against mine blasts. Vehicle also has an NBC protection
system.
The cab provides seating for the driver and one or two
passengers. Enclosed cargo area of the Kia MTV with 6x6
configuration accommodates up to 24 fully-equipped troops. Troops
are seated on collapsible benches. There are a number of firing ports
provided for the troops. Soldiers enter and leave the vehicle via a
rear power-operated door. Vehicle can also carry 3 t of cargo over
rough terrain. It is likely that it can carry more cargo on hard surface
roads.
The Kia MTV
can be configured as a troop or cargo carrier, armored ambulance,
command post vehicle or signals vehicle.
This armored
truck uses a number of commercially available automotive components. Vehicle is
powered by a 10-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 380 hp.
Later a 420 hp engine was introduced. It complies with EURO 5
emission requirements. Engine is mated to an automatic transmission.
Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel drive. This armored truck is fitted with
central tyre inflation system and run-flat tyres. Vehicle can
continue driving on a damaged tires up to a distance of 48 km and up
to speeds of 48 km/h.
The Kia MTV
can be airlifted by
Airbus A400M Atlas
or
Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules military cargo aircraft.
