The KamAZ-78504 is a new Russian tank transporter. It is reportedly based on the Belarusian MZKT technology. It was developed as part of a whole family of multi-axle high-mobility vehicles. The new KamAZ-78504 tank transporter was first publicly revealed in 2015. It is aimed to replace the ageing MAZ-537G, that was adopted back in the 1960s and is still widely used by the Russian Army. In 2013 a KamAZ-65225 tank transporter has been adopted by the Russian Army. It is being fielded in large numbers and partially replaced the MAZ-537G. However it lacks cross-country mobility of the ageing MAZ. The KamAZ-78504 was specially developed as a heavy-duty high mobility vehicle.

It is most likely that the KamAZ-78504 is planned to be used in conjunction with a 3-axle semi-trailer. This tank transporter can haul main battle tanks, heavy armored vehicles, self-propelled artillery systems, construction equipment and other military loads.

The prime mover has a double cab. It accommodates driver, co-driver, around 4 more passengers. This tank transporter can carry the whole crew of the main battle tank, that it hauls. For operation in hotspot areas the cab can be fitted with add-on armor kit.

Engine is located behind and under the cab. The prime mover has an 8x8 configuration with full-time all wheel drive. Vehicle is fitted with a central tyre inflation system. This tank transporter has some degree of cross-country mobility and can travel over rugged terrain.

Some sources report that more versions of the 8x8 vehicle are being developed, such as a ballast tractor. This tank transporter was developed as a part of new family of armored vehicles. This family also includes KamAZ-78509 special wheeled chassis with 12x12 configuration (payload capacity 50 t) and KamAZ-7850 special wheeled chassis with 16x16 configuration (payload capacity 85 t). Both of these vehicles were specially designed to carry ballistic missiles.
