The IVECO M40.10 series of light utility vehicles is currently in service with the Italian Army. This vehicle was designed for high mobility both on and off road. The main goal was to provide airborne and other similar formations with a light truck. This military vehicle is in fact based on a 1st generation IVECO Daily commercial van. It fills the gap between Jeeps and light trucks. Its production commenced in the late 1980s. Italian Armed Forces obtained more than 1 400 of these military vehicle in various configurations. The M40.10 series vehicles have been exported to a number of countries. It was adopted by at least 10 NATO countries. Another major operator was Pakistan with 2 200 vehicles. Furthermore this military vehicle has been license produced in Canada, China, Egypt and reportedly Malaysia. Around 18 000 of these vehicles were produced during the last 30 years, including license-produced vehicles.

The series designation is made up of nominal vehicle weight and nominal engine power. The IVECO M40.10 has a payload capacity of 1.5 t. The baseline vehicle comes with a 2.8 m long wheelbase. It is used for a variety of tactical roles, including troop and cargo transport, support and maintenance roles. It can also tow trailers and light artillery pieces off-road with a maximum weight of 1 500 kg. This vehicle can function as a light artillery tractor and tow a 105 mm light field howitzer or 120 mm mortar.

This vehicle can be configured in a number of ways. Driving cab is usually fitted with a soft top, however hard top was also available. Cargo compartment is of all-steel construction. The cab accommodates driver and 2 passengers. There are folding seats along each side for 10 men. Windscreen can be tilted forward to reduce vehicle height.

The IVECO M40.10 was designed for simple installation of different body types, such as van or ambulance for 4 stretchers. It can carry a standard S250 military container shelter.

This vehicle can be equipped with an M40 series 106 mm recoilless rifle or anti-tank guided missile launcher, as well as various machine guns.

Vehicle uses commercial platform of the IVECO Daily van. It is powered by Fiat 8142 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 103 hp. Engine is mated to a manual 5-speed gearbox. A front-mounted winch was proposed as an option. Two IVECO M40.10s can be airlifted by the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. This vehicle can be airdropped.

Successor of the IVECO M40.10 eventually became the new IVECO 70.20WM, which is a militarized version of the new commercial IVECO Daily van. The new vehicle can carry significantly more payload.

It can be airlifted and airdropped by Shaanxi Y-8 tactical transport aircraft. Some indigenous versions of the NJ2046 were built in china, such as a ZBF-05 light armored personnel carrier.
