The Ford
F-350 Super Duty is a commercial pickup truck. This heavy-duty
vehicle is produced in large numbers. This popular and rugged
vehicle is also used by the military. It is in service with Iraq
(300), Ireland, Qatar, and possibly other countries.
The F-350
Super Duty is a larger and heavier version of traditional F-350
truck line. It has a payload capacity of about 2 000 kg, depending
on the version. It also has significant towing capacity. It can tow trailers and artillery pieces.
The F350
pickup is
available in a variety of chassis lengths. Standard 2- or 4-door
cabs are available. Also there are versions with extended cabs.
Furthermore there are armored versions
of this pickup truck.
Vehicle is
powered by a 6-liter Ford PowerStroke V8 turbocharged diesel engine,
developing 350 hp. It is mated to a 5-speed automatic or 6-speed
manual transmission. Vehicle has a 4x4 configuration.
Irish armed
forces use a special recon vehicle. It open-topped truck fitted with
machine guns. It is used by Irish Rangers for reconnaissance and
long-range patrols.
In the early
2000 Ford produced a concept truck, to meet a US Army's COMBATT
(Commercially Based Tactical Truck) requirement. It was based on the
F-350 chassis with 4-door crew cab. The truck was modified to meet
military needs. It has upgraded suspension. Hull floor was
strengthened for operation over rough terrain. Also it was fitted
with a central tyre inflation system and run-flat tyres.
There are
some other military vehicles, based on the Ford F-350 series
commercial chassis, such as
Oshkosh Sandcat, that is based on a shortened F-350 chassis.
Some countries operate armored vehicles that have an armored hulls,
mounted on this 4x4 heavy-duty chassis.
