The Ashok Leyland is an Indian vehicle manufacturing company. Over the years products of this company have built a reputation for reliability and ruggedness. It is the leading supplier of logistics vehicles to Indian Army. The FAT or Field Artillery Tractor was designed as a private venture and was aimed both at domestic and foreign markets. Vehicle was designed to be used as a gun tractor for up to 155 mm field guns and howitzers. It also carries ammunition and artillery crews. The FAT was trialed by the Indian Army and was eventually adopted to service. In 2016 a contract was signed to supply 450 Ashok Leyland FAT artillery tractors to the Indian Army. Deliveries began in 2017. It replaces in service a fleet of ageing Scania SBAT 6x6 artillery tractors, delivered since 1986. A total of 660 Scania artillery tractors were delivered to the Indian Army and now these are over 30 years old.

The FAT has a payload capacity of 10 000 kg. It can tow artillery system with a maximum weight of around 8 000 kg. It is used to tow the FH-77B howitzer. It will be also used to tow the new ATAGS 155 mm howitzer.

Vehicle is fitted with forward control cab and a chassis mounted artillery crew cabin. The forward control cab accommodates driver plus 3 passengers. The rear cabin accommodates 6 passengers. So this truck can carry the entire gun crew. The cabs can be fitted with add-on armor kit for protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters.

This military truck is equipped with a 2.7 t capacity hydraulic hoist for self-loading and unloading of ammunition.

Initially the FAT artillery tractor was powered by the Ashok Leyland BSIII turbocharged diesel engine, developing 345 hp. Later it was proposed with a Cummins ISM 420-30 diesel engine, developing 410 hp. Engine options up to 500 hp were available. Though it seems that production version is fitted with Ashok Leyland's Neptune CRS diesel, developing 360 hp. Engine is mated to an 8-speed manual gearbox. Vehicle has a constant all-wheel drive and is fitted with a central tyre inflation system, to suit different terrain conditions. The FAT has been developed specially for desert and semi-desert areas. It can move through deep sand. Vehicle is also fitted with a self-recovery winch.
