The VFM 5
light tank was developed by Vickers. It is based on the
XM8
light tank, developed by FMC. Overall design was simplified to
reduce price of the tank. The VFM 5 was intended mainly for
export customers, however it received no production orders.
The VFM 5 is
a light and airportable vehicle. It's Hull and turret are welded from
aluminum armor. Front arc is reinforced with additional armor
plates.
The VFM 5
light tank is armed with a fully-stabilized 105-mm rifled gun,
developed by Royal Ordnance. This gun is loaded manually, unlike the
XM8 fitted with an autoloader. Autoloader was removed to keep the
production price down. This 105-mm gun fires all standard NATO 105-mm
ammunition. A total of 19 rounds are located inside the combat compartment and
are ready to use.
Secondary
armament consists of coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun and roof mounted
12.7-mm MG.
The VFM 5
light tank has a crew of four, including commander, driver, gunner
and loader.
Vehicle is
powered by Detroit Diesel 6M-92TA diesel engine, developing 550 hp.
