The T-64B1M is a recent Ukrainian upgrade of the T-64B1. It was developed by Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau. The tank is fitted with new add-on armor. Originally these upgraded tanks were built for export and were planned to be delivered to Congo. However due ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, tanks were delivered to Ukrainian armed forces instead. First vehicles were handed over to Ukrainian units in 2014. It is known that at least 10 tanks were delivered to Ukrainian armed forces.

Its predecessor, the T-64B1 was accepted to service with the Soviet Army alongside the T-64B in 1976. It was a cheaper version of the T-64B with no capability to launch anti-tank guided missiles. The T-64B1M was a version of the T-64B1. It was produced between 1983 and 1985. From time to time during these tanks were upgraded in order to improve their capabilities.

Ukrainian Army has about 2 200 T-64 main battle tanks. These were inherited from the Soviet Army. A small number of these tanks are being upgraded for local needs. However most of these surplus tanks are being kept in storage. Ukrspetsexport, a Ukrainian state-owned arms trading company offers refurbished and upgraded surplus tanks for export customers from army stocks.

After the recent Ukrainian upgrade, protection of this tank has been improved. It is fitted with built-in Nozh modular explosive reactive armor. Developers claim that this armor provides protection against tandem warheads and reduces penetration of APFSDS rounds by over 90%. The same armor is used on Ukrainian Army T-64BM Bulat and Oplot main battle tanks. The tank is also fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.

The T-64B1M is armed with a 125-mm smoothbore gun. It is fitted with an automatic loader. Maximum effective range of fire is 2 500 m at daytime and up to 1 500 m at night. A total of 37 rounds are carried for the main gun. The T-64B1M, as its predecessor, lacks capability to launch anti-tank guided missiles.

There is a coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun and remotely-controlled 12.7-mm machine gun.

It seems that Ukrainian T-64B1M retains out-dated fire control system of the T-64B1. It is no match for modern fire control system. However considering that this tank is intended for developing countries, it is adequate for its missions.

This tank is operated by a crew of three, including commander, gunner and drive.

The T-64B1M is powered by Ukrainian 6TD turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 000 hp. This engine is available since the early 1980s. At that time it was a better and more powerful alternative to original 5TD and 5TDF engines, that were notoriously unreliable.

As typical to all Soviet Cold War-era tanks this machine is fitted with a self-entrenching blade. It can prepare a firing position within 12-40 minutes, depending on the soil type. The tank can be also fitted with a deep wading kit and ford water obstacles with a maximum depth of 5 m.

Overall in terms of protection, firepower and mobility the T-64B1M is broadly similar to the T-64BM Bulat, used by Ukrainian Army. The T-64B1M has a more powerful engine, while the Bulat has fire control advantages and can launch guided missiles. However the 6TD engine can be also fitted on Bulat.
