The Chinese Type 054A class frigate (NATO reporting name Jiangkai II) is an improvement on the existing Type 054 class. Until 2016, 21 of these modern vessels have been commissioned. Three more and under construction and two more planned. Each vessel costs roughly 240 million dollars.

These vessels represent a significant improvement over the Type 054 for several reasons. The Type 054A has a stealthier and lighter main gun, improved Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS), better sensors, and more Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs). In addition, the HQ-16 SAMs fitted on Type 054As have an improved range of 50 km and can attack targets from all angles.

With survival in mind, the Type 054A is a somewhat “stealthy” design built of radar absorbent material with clean lines free of clutter resulting in the least possible radar return. It also possesses two eighteen-tube decoy rocket launchers that fire decoys/chaff to distract guided missiles from their targets.

Vessels of this class were built primarily for with air-defense, although they can perform anti-surface and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) missions. Their radar can track up to 40 targets simultaneously at a maximum range of approximately 120 km.

Located amidships are two quadruple anti-ship/land-attack missile launchers that can attack targets up to 250 km distant. Towards the front is a dual-purpose 76-mm cannon turret, which can fire effectively at 120 rounds per minute at targets 10 km distant. The two CIWS can fire 5 000 rounds per minute at targets 3 km distant.

ASW armament is composed of two torpedo tubes, sonar, ASW rockets with a range of 1 200 m, and a helicopter. Overall, the ship is a highly capable escort, with advanced radar and processing electronics, representing China’s increasing ability to project power in highly dangerous areas.

The Type 054A class has a helipad and hanger that can hold one helicopter: either the 1980s Russian export version of the Ka-27, the Ka-28, or the 1980s Chinese Z-9C helicopter which was developed from the French Eurocopter AS365 Dauphin.

China has deployed ships of this class to the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy operations, to Libya to rescue Chinese citizens from the war there, and to the Mediterranean Sea to help escort confiscated Syrian chemical weapons.

China has offered Type 054A frigates to Thailand, Russian, and Malaysia, although no deals have been enacted yet. Thailand declined in favor of two South Korean modified Gwanggaeto the Great class destroyers, primarily because they were half the cost.

Beginning with the 18th unit, there has been an updated model produced with an improved eleven-barrel CIWS and better sonar for submarine detection. This variant is unofficially known as the Type 054A+.
