The Type 88 is a Japanese coastal defense missile system. Its development began in 1979. It was officially adopted and production commenced in 1988. Japanese military obtained a total of 54 launcher vehicles with anti-ship missiles, plus associated support vehicles. Production of this system ceased in 2001.

This coastal defense missile system uses SSM-1 anti-ship missiles. It is a ground-launched version of the Type 80 or ASM-1 anti-ship missile, carried by the Japanese F-1 and F-2 close support and anti-shipping fighters. The SSM-1 has a longer body with more fuel and an added booster. It is generally similar to the US Harpoon and even use some of its components. This Japanese anti-ship missile has a range of around 150-200 km. It travels at an altitude of 5-6 m above the water. On its terminal stage the SSM-1 uses active radar homing. This missile has similar radar seeker as the US Harpoon. The SSM-1 has a high explosive warhead with some degree of armor-piercing capabilities.

The Type 88 system is based on a Type 74 military truck. This truck has 6x6 configuration and was produced by Mitsubishi. The launcher vehicle carries 6 anti-ship missiles. At some point the Type 74 truck was modernized and updated.

A radar vehicle is based on a Type 73 Kogata light utility vehicle chassis. This mobile radar searches for offshore vessels and provides target information. The Type 88 launcher vehicle is also supported by a reloading vehicle, based on a similar Type 74 military truck chassis. It carries reload missiles. There is also a command post vehicle, based on a Type 73 6x6 truck.

The Type 88 was succeeded by a new Type 12 coastal defense missile system. It uses new missiles. These have active radar homing with a GPS update and target discrimination capabilities. The Type 12 launchers are carried by a Mitsubishi special wheeled chassis with 8x8 configuration.

Variants

Type 90 is a naval anti-ship missile system carried by warships. It uses naval SSM-1B missiles. In function it is similar to the US Haroon anti-ship missile.
