   The OMTAS, also known as the Mizrak-O, manufactured by Roketsan is the first man-portable medium-range anti-armor missile developed in Turkey. Although its exact origins are unknown, on paper it qualifies as a fourth-generation ATGM endowed with range, precision, and lethality.

   The OMTAS has so far only been deployed in promotional media and arms shows. Its appearance, however, seems to have been influenced by missiles like the TOW-2B and the Israeli Spike-MR. It’s worth considering if the OMTAS is reliant on foreign technology for its guidance system and software. Since it’s common for manufacturers to source parts across an international supply chain this can’t be ruled out.

   The OMTAS is meant as a sibling to the heavier UMTAS/Mizrak-U also produced by Roketsan. While the latter is a multi-purpose long-range missile like the Hellfire, the OMTAS is an all-in-one firepower asset for its clients. It can be deployed in modules on remote turrets for armored vehicles and used by individual soldiers.

   As an infantry weapon the OMTAS does scale on the heftier side of the spectrum. The missile weighs a cumbersome 24 kg and requires a sealed plastic and fiberglass launch tube, a fire control system housed in a sighting unit with day/night visibility, and a collapsible tripod for proper use in a fixed position. Based on its warhead’s diameter, which is very large for an anti-tank missile, the OMTAS appears designed for knocking out main battle tanks with explosive reactive armor. It can travel a distance of 4 000 meters either as a fire-and-forget or as a flyover top attack round. When navigating difficult terrain the OMTAS’ battle software also has a fire-and-adjust mode wherein the target lock can be altered when the missile is mid-air. This gives the operator and his or her spotter the freedom to choose which flight path is best suited for the target.

   Since the OMTAS hasn’t been used in actual combat, its dimensions and performance characteristics suggest a missile with the same destructiveness of an FGM-148 Javelin but with extra range. In terms of armor penetration—a specification that remains unspecified—the OMTAS missile’s warhead could punch through most vehicles, buildings, and fortifications.

   The Turkish Army still uses a combination of TOW, Kornet, and Eryx ATGMs for its mechanized infantry units. This is because the development of the OMTAS only started in the 2010s. It might take a few more years before the system is pushed as a next-generation missile system for eager clients.

 

Variants

 

   UMTAS, also known as Mizrak-U, is an air-launched long-range anti-tank missile, similar to the US Hellfire. It has longer range than the OMTAS.
