Things You Need to Know When Purchasing a Used Gun

What you should know when buying a used gun

Most people are increasingly turning to the used market when looking to buy firearms. Just as with any other necessary purchase, a little forethought and knowledge can go a long way to ensure you make the correct purchasing decision. It is, however, essential to know that although purchasing a used gun is a great way to cut down on the cost, there are numerous problems that don't come with the fresh manufacturer firearms. However, if you're well-informed and lucky, you can manage to come out with a good bargain. Below are a few tips that will guide you through the purchase process, and ensure you'll ultimately be satisfied with your used gun purchase.

   Research who you're buying from

Whether you're buying in person or online, ensure you conduct some preliminary research on who exactly will be selling you the gun. This is much easier when you already know the seller in person, but it's not always the case. When going for online marketplaces, ensure the site is reputable and reliable. Search for the customer feedback, rating, and reviews before you commit your hard-earned cash. You can also visit a gun store, pawnshops, and go to gun shows. These are more reliable compared to Internet purchases, as you'll have a direct transaction with the seller and be there to inspect your firearm.

   Check the appearance

The general appearance should be your first indicator of the gun's condition. Therefore, it's crucial that you conduct an external inspection to learn more about the gun just as you'd do when buying a used vehicle. You'll also get some insight as to the care level given by the previous owner. Since there are many guns in the marketplace, stay away from anything that doesn't look worth it.

   Inspect the barrel/bore

When you're purchasing a used firearm, the first thing to do is to inspect the bore. Take out the bolt and look through the bore from the muzzle end. If you notice any imperfection on the inside, this should be your first caution, as this will significantly impact the accuracy of the firearm. The bore must be clean and round, with the lands and grooves sharp and bright. Also, look for any discoloration that may indicate rust, which is a gun's most lethal foe.

   Check the function

Externally, make sure that the barrel is straight as some come with slight bent. Ensure that all the factory-installed sights are solid and intact. Inspect the stock for any signs of repairs or cracks, especially around the action area. Work the action several times to ensure that it's functioning smoothly with no signs of rust. With the pump shotguns and autoloaders, disassemble the gun and inspect for any signs of regular cleaning. Run several shells through to ascertain that the action is functioning as designed and smoothly.
