The Kamov Ka-226 is a small utility helicopter with coaxial rotors. It is a new generation version of the successful Ka-26 (Western reporting name Hoodlum). This helicopter was developed both for military and civil customers. The Ka-226 made its first flight in 1997. The type was adopted by the Russian Air Force in 2002. A small number of these helicopters was ordered by the Russian FSB security service and Ministry of Internal Affairs. Indian armed forces ordered 64 of these helicopters, albeit in slightly improved. Ukraine Ministry of Emergency Situations ordered one Ka-226 helicopter. Some o these helicopters were ordered by commercial organizations.

Unusual feature of the Ka-226 is that it has an interchangeable mission module, attached to its bubble-shaped cockpit, instead of conventional cabin. Various modules have been developed, optimized for search and rescue, medical evacuation, disaster relief, patrol, police, fire fighting, crop-dusting, and so on. The helicopter can fly with or without module attached. The same design was present of the Ka-26.

The Ka-226 is operated by one or two pilots. With the passenger module installed, it accommodates 6 - 9 passengers, depending on the module. This helicopter has internal payload capacity of 1 400 kg. Alternatively it can carry loads of up to 1 500 kg on external sling. So with the module removed the Ka-226 can be even used as a flying crane.

This small helicopter has coaxial contra-rotating main rotors. Such design was typical to most Kamov helicopter. It eliminates the need for a tail rotor, thus reducing overall size of the helicopter. Also such design significantly reduced vibrations. The Ka-226 has new rotor system and transmission. Its rotors are made from composite materials. The original version is powered by a successful Rolls-Royce 250C (Allison 250-C20R/2) turboshaft engines, developing 450 shp each.

The low height of the rotor requires passengers to approach the helicopter from the rear, when the rotors are turning.

Compact dimensions of this helicopter come to an advantage when operating in urban areas. Some sources report that it can even land on a large truck bed.

Military versions of this helicopter carry no armament.

Variants

Ka-226T version was specially developed to meet a possible Indian requirements, as the original Ka-226T struggled to operate in mountainous terrain and hot environment. It is fitted with much more powerful French Turbomeca Arrius 2G1 engines, developing 670 shp each. Due to more powerful engine the Ka-226T has increased performance and is capable of operating at high altitudes, mountainous terrain and hot environments. Service ceiling for this helicopter is around 7 km. The Ka-226T has also got new avionics, automatic control system, navigation system and radar. This version was certified in 2015. During the same year India ordered 64 of these small utility helicopters for its armed forces. Indian might have a requirement for 197 of these helicopters.

Also there are specialized civilian variants of this helicopter.
