The M92 is a
compact assault rifle, produced in Serbia by Zastava Arms. It is a
shorter version of the
M70AB2
assault rifle. Essentially the M92 is a Serbian equivalent of
the Soviet
AKMSU compact assault rifle. The M92 was intended for
special forces and troops, that do not need a full-size assault
rifle, such as pilots, vehicle crews, artillery crews and so on.
This compact assault rifle has been exported to Congo, Jordan, and
possibly, some other countries. As of 2017 the M92 assault rifle is
still being offered by Zastava Arms.
The M92 is a
gas-operated weapon, chambered for 7.62x39 mm ammunition. The M92
has compact dimensions of a submachine gun. However this weapon
packs much more formidable punch than submachine gun due to its
powerful ammunition. The M92 is more efficient in close combat than
the full-size M70 assault rifle, as the M92 is easier to handle.
The M92 is a
very reliable and rugged weapon. This assault rifle is tolerant to
abusive use. It do not jams or misfires in worst conditions
possible. Also it has reliable extraction even with dirty chamber
and cases. Also this compact assault rifle is simple to use and to
maintain. The M92 can be field stripped for cleaning within
one minute without using any tools. The downside of this weapon as
it has poor ergonomics and is badly balanced. Also it is not
particularly accurate.
A combined
safety and fire mode selector switch locks the bolt group and the
trigger in the "safe" position. It also serves as a dust cover. It
has two other positions for semi-auto and full-auto.
The M92 is
fed from standard 30-round capacity magazines. These are
interchangeable with 7.62 mm magazines of the M70 assault rifle, as
well as its variants. Also this weapon is also compatible
with 75-round drum magazines. Furthermore it can accept Soviet and
Russian 7.62 mm magazines.
This weapon has an
underfolding metal stock.
The M92
comes with simple iron sights. Optical sights can be fitted, though
a special mount is required. This weapon has shorter effective range
and lower penetration than the M70 assault rifle. Its range of
effective fire is around 150 meters.
This weapon
has an unusual flash hider. However unlike the M70 assault rifle, it
can not mount a bayonet, underbarrel grenade launcher, or launch
rifle grenades.
Variants
M21S is a
newer compact assault rifle, or carbine, produced by Zastava Arms.
It is a shorter version of the M21 assault rifle. This weapon is
chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. Even though it
is unrelated to the M92, it was designed to replace it.
M21A is a
sub-compact assault rifle. It is even more compact than the M21S. It
is also chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. This
weapon was designed to replace the M92.
There are
some semi-automatic only versions of the M92, intended for civil
customers.
