In the 1970s
Brazilian armed forces decided to go with standard NATO 9x19 mm
ammunition and adopted Italian
Beretta 92 pistol to replace a locally produced version of an
At this point Beretta established factory in Sao Paulo, Brazil to
meet local demand. However in 1980 this factory was sold to the Forjas Taurus SA company. The Taurus PT92 is essentially a copy of
Beretta 92. However Taurus produces it without the need of a
license. It seems that production of this pistol commenced in 1983.
Since its introduction the PT92 has been
modified and improved. The Taurus company developed a number of its
own tweaked versions of this popular Italian pistol. The PT92 is in
service with Brazilian armed forces (M975) and law enforcement
forces. It has been exported to Argentina, Dominican Republic,
Indonesia, Libya, Malaysia and Paraguay. It is also popular amongst
civil customers. This
proven and high-quality pistol is less expensive
than the original Beretta 92. The Forjas Taurus SA company also
released a number of newer pistols.

PT100, chambered for .40 S&W ammunition. Otherwise it is similar to
PT92. It was adopted by some law enforcement forces of Brazil. It
seems that production of this pistol commenced in 1985;
PT101, chambered for .40 S&W ammunition, but with
adjustable rear sight;
