In the 1970s Brazilian armed forces decided to go with standard NATO 9x19 mm ammunition and adopted Italian Beretta 92 pistol to replace a locally produced version of an M1911. At this point Beretta established factory in Sao Paulo, Brazil to meet local demand. However in 1980 this factory was sold to the Forjas Taurus SA company. The Taurus PT92 is essentially a copy of Beretta 92. However Taurus produces it without the need of a license. It seems that production of this pistol commenced in 1983. Since its introduction the PT92 has been modified and improved. The Taurus company developed a number of its own tweaked versions of this popular Italian pistol. The PT92 is in service with Brazilian armed forces (M975) and law enforcement forces. It has been exported to Argentina, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Libya, Malaysia and Paraguay. It is also popular amongst civil customers. This proven and high-quality pistol is less expensive than the original Beretta 92. The Forjas Taurus SA company also released a number of newer pistols.

The Taurus PT92 is chambered for 9x19 mm Parabellum ammunition.

Frame and slide of this pistol are made either from carbon steel with blue finish or stainless steel with polished finish. Overall this pistol proved to be reliable. The company is that confident in its products, that offers a lifetime warranty for their products.

This pistol has a short-recoil action. It has a double-action trigger. This pistol has an ambidextrous frame-mounted safety. Also there is an automatic firing pin safety. Some models of the PT92 had a decocker. Second-generation models produced since the early 1990s have this feature as standard.

A dual-stack magazine of the PT92 holds 15 rounds. At some point Taurus began to produce 17-round magazines for this gun in order to give comparable firepower to the famous Glock 17. Also there are models aimed at US civilian customers. These have a magazine capacity of 10 rounds in order to comply with US laws.

This pistol has simple fixed iron sights. Majority of users praise the PT92 for its accuracy. Effective range of fire is 50 meters.

Latest models are fitted with accessory rail under the barrel. It can be used to mount tactical flashlight or laser pointer.

One of the most significant drawbacks of this pistol that it is bulky and heavy. Some people find it uncomfortable to hold, fire and handle. Also it is difficult to carry this pistol concealed.

There are some variants of the baseline PT92 pistol.
