The MPT-76 is a new Turkish battle rifle. The MPT or Milli Piyade Tufegi stands for National Infantry Rifle. It was developed by the MKEK, a Turkey's state-owned arms manufacturer. Development commenced in 2009. A first batch of 200 MPT-76 battle rifles were delivered to the Turkish armed forces in 2014. It was planned that another batch 5 000 rifles will be delivered by the end of 2015. To day a total of 35 000 of these rifles were ordered by the Turkish MoD. The MPT-76 will gradually replace the German Heckler & Koch G3A7 rifles, that were license-produced in Turkey.

Design of the MPT-76 was influenced by a German Heckler & Koch HK417. The MPT-76 It is a gas operated, selective fire weapon, chambered for a standard NATO 7.62x51 mm ammunition. Number in the designation denotes the "7.62-mm" caliber. There is also an MPT-56 assault rifle, chambered for the standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. However as of 2016 the 5.56x45 mm version was not adopted. It looks like the Turkish soldiers preferred a more powerful 7.62x51 mm round over the 5.56x45 mm due to longer range and penetration.

This new battle rifle received positive feedback from the Turkish soldiers. The MPT-76 reportedly outperformed the Heckler & Koch G3 in terms of accuracy and reliability.

The baseline MPT-76 comes with a 406 mm (16") barrel. Also there is a compact assault carbine version with 305 mm (12") barrel and designated marksman rifle with 508 mm (20") barrel.

This Turkish battle rifle is capable of semi-auto and full-auto firing. An ambidextrous fire mode selector is located over the pistol grip. However spent case extraction is to the right sight only.

This rifle is fed from 20-round magazines. Magazines are transparent. This feature allows to easily see how much rounds are left.

A buttstock is adjustable for length.

This weapon has a full-size Picatinny-type scope rail. There are flip-up iron sights. This rifle comes as standard with add-on carrying handle. When fitted it do not blocks the iron sights. The MPT-76 can be fitted with various optical sights or night vision scopes, however these are optional. Range of effective fire is 600 meters.

There are additional Picatinny-type accessory rails on the foregrip. This rifle can be fitted with a vertical handle, which can be also used as a bipod. This handle comes as standard with the rifle. This weapon can also mount a knife-bayonet and M203 40-mm underbarrel grenade launcher.

Variants

MPT-56 assault rifle, is a version, chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. Its design was influenced by Heckler & Koch HK416. It was intended to replace the Heckler & Koch HK33E assault rifles, that were license-produced in Turkey. It is a lighter weapon, fed from 30-round capacity magazines. It seems that the Turkish soldiers preferred the MPT-76 over the MPT-56 due to a more powerful ammunition, which has longer range and increased penetration. As of 2016 the MPT-56 has not been adopted.

MPT-76 assault carbine, fitted with a shorter 305 mm (12") barrel.

MPT-76 designated marksman rifle, fitted with a longer 508 mm (20") barrel. It comes with a more advanced buttstock, which has adjustable cheek and buttpad, in order to fit the shooter well. It is fitted with a different bipod.
