The L22A2 is a British compact assault rifle. It is an upgraded variant of the previous L22A1, which was reportedly never adopted. The L22A2 can be seen as a compact version of the L85A2 assault rifle, that is a standard issue weapon with the British Forces. This compact assault rifle was adopted in 2003-2004. It is used only in small numbers. It is issued to vehicle drivers, helicopter and aircraft pilots, artillery and tank crews for emergency action outside of their vehicle. This weapon is also used by the special forces.

The L22A2 has compact dimensions. Actually due to its bullpup layout it is more compact than a popular Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun. Furthermore it packs a much more formidable punch than the MP5, as it is chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm rifle round, rather than a 9x19 mm pistol round.

The L22A2 is a gas-operated, selective fire weapon. Comparing with the previous L22A1 a number of modifications were made to this weapon in order to improve its reliability and ease of use. All upgrades were made by the German Heckler & Koch company.

A fire mode selector is located well behind the magazine, on the left side of the receiver. It has settings for "semi-auto" and "full-auto".

The weapon is not ambidextrous. Extraction is only to the right side. Charging handle of the original L22A1 had a tendency to reflect ejected cases back into the action, thus causing stoppages. On the L22A2 the charging handle, as well as the bolt and its extractor claw were redesigned in order to improve ejection and avoid stoppages.

It looks like this weapon comes with 20-round capacity magazines. Though it is also compatible with standard 30-round magazines of the L85A2 assault rifle, as well as other standard M16-type magazines.

This weapon typically comes with optical 4x magnification sight, mounted on a quick-detachable mount. The optical sight has got simple iron sights for emergency use. Otherwise the L22A2 has got no iron sights. Newer versions of this assault rifle have got a Picatinny-type scope rail and are compatible with various red-dot sights and other scopes. Effective range of the L22A2 is around 150-200 meters.

This weapon lacks a proper foregrip, but comes as standard with a vertical grip. There are Picatinny-type accessory rails for various add-on accessories, such as tactical flashlight, or laser pointer.

This compact assault rifle can not mount an underbarrel grenade launcher, knife-bayonet or launch rifle grenades.

Newer version of this weapon have a Vortex-type flash hider, which can be used to shoot-through barbed wire.
