The IA2 assault rifle was designed by IMBEL of Brazil. The IMBEL or Industria de Material Belico do Brasil is a state owned defense company. Development of this weapon commenced in 2008. At that time it was clear that the previous IMBEL MD-97 could not meet the basic requirements of the Brazilian Army and replace the venerable FAL. Initially the IMBEL tried to improve the MD-97. However it was not sufficient to meet the Brazilian Army needs. So a completely new assault rifle was developed. The IA2 is an evolution of the FN FAL, that is license-produced by the IMBEL since the mid 1960s. Initially it was referred as the MD-97 Mk.II. It was first publicly revealed in 2010. Its testing by the Brazilian Army began shortly. In 2012 an initial order for 1 500 assault rifles was issued. These were distributed among all branches of Brazilian armed forces, including army, navy, air force, and special operation brigade. It was also adopted by Brazilian Military Police and some law enforcement forces. Some sources report that in 2013 Brazilian Army ordered 20 000 of these assault rifles. The IA2 replaces the older FAL, M16A2 and HK33 in service with Brazilian armed forces.

The baseline IMBEL IA2 assault rifle is chambered for a 5.56x45 mm Remington round. It is a standard NATO ammunition. There is also a version chambered for 7.62x51 mm ammunition, that is also standard with USA and NATO members. Even though the 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm versions look similar, in fact these are two different weapons with different internal mechanisms.

The IMBEL IA2 uses the FN FAL operating system. It is a gas-operated weapon. The baseline assault rifle has a 17.7" (440 mm) barrel. It is a selective fire weapon with semi-auto and full-auto modes. A non-reciprocating cocking handle is on the left side of the receiver.

The IA2 makes extensive use of polymers. It is significantly lighter than the original FN FAL. Also is has improved ergonomics. This assault rifle has a folding stock.

The IMBEL IA2 is fed from 30-round magazines. Also it accepts all standard STANAG magazines, such as the magazines form M16.

The IMBEL IA2 has iron sights, similar to those of the FN FAL. A flip-up rear sights is adjustable in 2 positions, for 150 and 300 meters. Also it has an integral Picatinny rail and can be fitted with various optics, red-dot or holographic sights. Effective range is up to 600 m.

A wide range of add-on equipment can be fitted to the forward grip, such as M203 grenade launcher, tactical flashlights, lasers, additional forward grip, bipod and so on. The IA2 can be also fitted with detachable knife-bayonet. The flash hider can be used to launch rifle grenades.
