The CZ 805 BREN assault rifle was first revealed in 2009. This weapon was developed in conjunction with the Czech Army and was aimed to replace the ageing Sa vz.58. In 2009 it was adopted for partial rearmament of the Czech Army. The Czech MoD obtained 17 678 of these assault rifles for special forces, reconnaissance battalions, and rapid deployment forces. Deliveries were completed in 2015. It is planned that until 2020 additional rifles will be obtained in order to entirely replace the old vz.58 rifles. Small batches of the CZ 805 have been exported to, Mexico, Moldova, Slovakia, and, possibly Egypt.

The CZ 805 is a gas operated, selective fire weapon, chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. Its design was influenced by the Heckler & Koch G36. The CZ 805 was originally developed as a multi-caliber weapon. It modular design enables simple changing of the caliber. This assault rifle can be also converted to use 7.62x39 mm and 6.8x43 mm ammunition. Caliber change is performed by the shooter by simply replacing the barrel, gas-piston unit, breech block and magazine housing. Three barrel lengths are available for each caliber. This weapon was originally planned to be available in three versions - carbine, standard assault rifle and light machine gun / marksman rifle.

The CZ 805 has an aluminum receiver. A number of parts are made form polymers. However soon after its adoption it appeared that this weapon has a number of teething problems. It was criticized by the soldiers as being to heavy, having poor ergonomics and bad balance (which reduces its firing accuracy). Unlike on most modern assault rifles its cocking handle reciprocates while firing and do not stops at its rear position when all ammunition is expended.

An ambidextrous cocking handle can be mounted on either side of the housing. The trigger group is also ambidextrous.

A fire mode selector has "semi-auto", "2-round burst", "full-auto" and "safe" settings. Spent cases are ejected to the right side only, however there is a case deflector, which propels cases from the left-handed shooter.

The CZ 805 assault rifle is normally fed from 30-round capacity magazines. Also there are 20-, and 100-round capacity magazines for this weapon. First production CZ 805s were supplied with transparent magazines, that were interchangeable with the German Heckler & Koch G36 magazines. Two or three of these magazines could be clipped together for rapid reloading. However later the CZ805s were supplied with the standard NATO M16-type magazines.

A polymer shoulder stock folds to the right side. When folded it do not obstructs ejection port. It is adjustable for length. Buttstocks of later production models are fitted with cheek pads. The shoulder stock can be completely removed, without affecting operation of the weapon. Pistol grip can be equipped with different backstraps in order to suit the shooter.

The CZ 805 assault rifle comes with integral Picatinny-type rail on top of the receiver. It can be fitted with detachable iron sights or a wide array of scopes and night vision sights. Range of effective fire is around 500 meters.

This weapon can mount a multi-purpose knife-bayonet, CZ 805 G1 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher and a number of other accessories. A sound suppressor can also be fitted.

Variants

CZ 805 BREN A1 is a standard assault rifle. Actually in terms of dimensions it is closer to carbines, rather than full-size assault rifles.

   CZ 805 BREN A2 is a carbine with a shorter 277 mm (10.9") barrel.

CZ 805 BREN S1 semi-automatic only civilian version.

CZ 806 BREN 2 assault rifle. It is an improved and lighter version of the CZ 805 BREN. Improvements were made to address all of these issues related to the CZ 805 problems.
