The Chang Feng 05, or CF-05 is a Chinese submachine gun. This weapon is also referred as CS-06, or Type 06. Development reportedly commenced in 1993-1994. A prototype named QC-9 appeared in 2004. The design was finalized in 2004-2005. The CF-05 competed against other designs to meet a Chinese army requirement for a new compact submachine gun. However it was not selected by the Chinese military due to the overly complicated design. Instead the Chinese armed forces went for the QCW-05. Despite that production of the CF-05 reportedly commenced in 2005. This submachine gun is used by China's law enforcement forces, notably counter-terrorist units. It has been exported to Myanmar (100 000 units) and Uganda.

A version of the CF-05, intended for domestic market, is chambered for 5.8x21 mm ammunition. This ammunition is used by the Chinese military and some law enforcement forces. There is also another version chambered for the standard 9x19 mm Parabellum ammunition. It is intended for domestic market, as well as for export.

The CF-05 is a blowback-operated weapon. he most unusual feature about this submachine gun is that it uses a high-capacity helical magazines, located on top of the weapon. The magazine holds 50 rounds. Helical magazines were originally patented by Calico company and were used on their submachine guns, notably Calico M950. The CF-05 has some features of the Calico submachine guns, however it is a new design rather than a clone.

Location of the magazine on top of the receiver allowed to reduce overall size of the weapon. The magazine contains a helical glide grooves at its inner walls, with the rotating central follower that causes the cartridges to follow the helical track inside the cylinder. Such design allows to store 50 rounds of ammunition in relatively compact package. Due to its high magazine capacity this submachine gun can deliver a volume of fire.

Prototype of the CF-05, the QC-9, had a secondary feed capability, with a magazine inserted into the pistol grip. It used standard QSZ-92 pistol magazines. When the main helical magazine was out of ammo, the shooter could switch to the secondary magazine, located inside the pistol grip, to sustain firing. However after testing this feature was deleted due to inconvenience for field operations.

A fire mode selector is located on the left side of the receiver. Though there were versions of this weapon with an ambidextrous fire mode selector. Spent cases are ejected to the right side.

The CF-05 has a telescoping shoulder stock.

This weapon comes with simple iron sights. There are three range settings for 50, 100 and 150 meters. A claimed effective range of fire is around 150 meters. Though actual effective range is around 100 meters.

This submachine gun has a threaded barrel and can mount a silencer. Other accessories may include a tactical flashlight, laser pointer and even an optical sight.
