The Beretta MX4 is a selective fire version of the CX4 Storm pistol. This submachine gun was first announced in 2011. This weapon has got an unusual appearance. It is aimed at law enforcement forces. In 2014 a small number of these submachine guns were delivered to Italian Navy. India reportedly ordered 34 500 Beretta MX4 submachine guns for its Ministry of Home Affairs forces.

This Italian submachine gun is based on the CX4 Storm pistol, which was originally developed for law enforcement forces and civil customers. However the MX4 has an added fully-automatic firing mode. It has the same blowback-operated action. This weapon is chambered for a standard 9x19 mm Parabellum ammunition. Despite its unusual appearance the MX4 Storm is simple to use and comfortable to handle. Its furniture is made of robust polymer materials.

This weapon has got ambidextrous controls. An ambidextrous safety and fire mode selector button is located over the pistol grip. It has 3 positions for "safe", "semi-auto", and "full-auto" modes. There is also a firing pin block safety. A charging handle can be installed on either side of the receiver. Spent cases can be also ejected to either side of the receiver. This submachine gun has a loaded chamber indicator.

This submachine gun has a last shot bolt hold. After the last round from the magazine has been fired, the bolt remains in opened position. This feature speeds up reloading of the weapon.

The Beretta MX4 Storm can be easily field stripped into a couple of mayor components.

This weapon is fed from 30-round capacity magazines. It is also compatible with Beretta's pistol magazines with 15-, 17-, and 20-round capacity. Magazines are housed inside the pistol grip. Magazine release button is located in the pistol grip.

Unlike most modern submachine guns the Beretta MX4 Storm lacks a side-folding stock. Instead it comes with integral buttstock, which can not be removed.

This weapon has got simple iron sights. The rear sight has adjustments for 50 and 100 meters. This submachine gun comes as standard with Picatinny-type scope rail and can mount various red dot sights. It is claimed that with the sight fitted this weapon is fairly accurate out to a range of 100 meters.

Optional add-on accessory rails can be installed on the foregrip. This submachine gun can mount various add-on accessories, such as vertical grips, tactical flashlights or laser pointers. Barrel's muzzle is threaded and can mount a sound suppressor.
