The AK-107 assault rifle is a further development of the AK-100 series. However it is a slightly different weapon with different internal design. The AK-107 was first publicly revealed in the late 1990s. Some sources report that limited number of these assault rifles is in service with the Russian armed forces.

The AK-107 is a gas-operated, selective fire weapon, chambered for a 5.45x39 mm ammunition. It is based on the AK-74 design, but uses a so called "balancing action" to counter recoil. As a result in fully-automatic mode the AK-107 is around 15-20% more accurate than the AK-101. This weapon is also capable of 3-round burst firing. Otherwise the AK-107 is similar to the AK-101 or AK-74M. Design of this assault rifle differs from the AK-100 series, though many parts are interchangeable. This weapon is simple in design and is cheap to manufacture. Balanced recoil system was also applied in an AEK-971 assault rifle.

This assault rifle use basically the same operation mechanism of the AK-47, developed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the mid 1940s. This weapon can withstand any misuse and abuse that soldier can throw at it. This assault rifle is not too accurate, comparing with the best Western examples, but will operate in worst conditions possible. Also this assault rifle is easy to maintain.

The AK-107 has a traditional AK-style safety/fire mode selector switch.

This weapon is fed from 30-round magazines or newly-developed 60-round magazines. It can also accept 30-round magazines of the AK-74M and AK-105 assault rifles and 45-round magazines of an RPK-74 light machine gun.

The AK-107 assault rifle has a side-folding polymer stock.

This assault rifle comes with simple iron sights. Sighting range is 1 000 m, though range of effective fire is around 500 m. Newer models have a Picatinny-type rail and can be fitted with various optics, including night vision sights.

This weapon can mount a knife-bayonet or GP-30 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher. A sound suppressor can be also fitted.

Variants

AK-108 is similar to the AK-107, but is chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition and is intended for export. It was publicly introduced alongside AK-107 in the late 1990s. the As far as it is known the AK-108 received no production orders.

AK-109 is also similar to the AK-107, but only differs in the type of ammunition. It is chambered for 7.62x39 mm round. This weapon appeared recently.

Saiga-107 is a civilian semi-automatic only version of the AK-107.
