The TRAK 6000M was developed by TRAK International. It won competition against two other vehicles to meet a US Army requirement. Production commenced in 1989. Deliveries to the US Army began in 1990. It was designated as Variable Reach Rough Terrain Forklift Truck, or VRRTFLT. In 1991 this all-terrain forklift has seen action during the Operation Desert Storm in Iraq. By that time over 300 vehicles were in service with the US Army. During this military conflict the TRAK 6000M performed exceptionally well. Later it was used in Bosnia, Afghanistan and again in Iraq. This military forklift has also been adopted by the US Air Force, which received around 400 vehicles. Production ceased in 1995. Over 2 200 of these forklifts were made both for the US Army and Air Force. The modified TRAK 6000M has been exported to New Zealand. In 1995 the US Army awarded the TRAK International production contract for a follow-on ATLAS all-terrain forklift.

The TRAK 6000M was used to handle pallets, boxes and other loads unloaded from transport vehicles and standard 20 ft and 40 ft containers. It could also handle MLRS pods with rockets. It can lift loads with a maximum weight of 4.5 t.

This forklift is fitted with a one-man enclosed cab. The cab provides protection for the operator against rollover and falling objects.

This machine is powered by a Cummins 6BT 5.9-liter turbocharged diesel engine, developing 152 hp. This machine had problem with engine failures. Individual units were authorized to replace the diesel engine of the 6000M with a more reliable engine of the ATLAS forklift. Transmission has 3 forward and 3 reverse speeds. Vehicle has three steering modes. These include all-wheel steer, front-wheel steer and crab steer. Vehicle has a full-time all-wheel drive. The TRAK 6000M is capable of operating over rough terrain. It is worth noting that this forklift can tow other vehicles, with a maximum weight of 12.2 t.

This forklift can be airlifted by a C-130 Hercules tactical cargo aircraft. It takes only 15 minutes to prepare this machine for flight.

The TRAK 6000M can operate in climatic conditions ranging from -32C to +49C.

Variants

Version exported to New Zealand was modified and could handle heavier loads.
