The Heavy Mine Breaching Vehicle (HMBV) was developed in Finland by Patria to meet operational requirements of Finnish Defense Forces. Sometimes this vehicle is referred as Leopard 2R. Since 2005 Finnish Defense Forces operate a fleet of 124 ex-German Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks. To support this fleet some minefield breaching vehicles and armored bridgelayers, based on the same chassis, were acquired. First Heavy Mine Breaching Vehicles were delivered for trials in 2006. After the trials have been completed a total of 6 machines were acquired. Some sources report that officially HMBVs entered service in 2008.

The main role of this vehicle is to clear pathways through minefields, creating safe lanes for other vehicles to pass. It allows assault units to move rapidly through obstacles, before enemy forces establish defenses.

This combat engineering vehicle is based on refurbished Leopard 2A4 MBT chassis. The turret has been removed and replaced by new non-rotating superstructure. Pearson Engineering of the United Kingdom supplied a complete suite of mine clearing equipment. A full-width mine plow is installed at the front. It is operated by the driver. Vehicle is also fitted with a cleared lane marking system, installed at the rear. It deploys pennants into the ground as the machine moved forward. Large containers for additional specialized equipment are fitted at the rear over the engine deck.

In order to carry out some combat engineer roles a front-mounted dozer blade can be rapidly installed in place of the mine plough. It is also operated by the driver. With the dozer blade installed vehicle can be used to clear battlefield obstacles, prepare firing positions and prepare sites for bridging operations.

The Heavy Mine Breaching Vehicle offers even higher level of protection than the original Leopard 2A4. Additional floor has been added internally to improve crew survivability against anti-tank mines. All of the crew seats are attached to the roof for additional survivability. Vehicle is fitted with NBC protection system.

This military machine is operated by a crew of three, including commander, engineer and driver. Also there is space for one passenger or one more crew member. There are a number of forward-facing cameras and passive night vision equipment.

Vehicle is armed with a roof-mounted 12.7-mm machine gun. This machine gun is controlled manually and is mainly intended to engage air targets. Also there are a number of smoke grenade dischargers.

The Finnish HMBV is powered by MTU BM-837 Ka501 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 1 500 hp. Mobility and cross-country performance of this engineering vehicle are similar to those of the Leopard 2A4.
