The John Deere 850J is a commercial design. It follows the lines of the John Deere J-series dozers. In 2008 this machine was adopted by the Australian armed forces. In 2009 the US Marine Corps (USMC) adopted the John Deere 850J dozer as the Medium Crawler Tractor or MTC. A contract was awarded for up to 540 machines. These replaced the USMC fleet of Caterpillar D7G bulldozers. It is possible that this John Deere bulldozer is also used by some other military operators.

The John Deere does not manufacture any special militarized bulldozers. Instead dome modifications are typically made to standard commercial machines in order to adapt them for military use. These modifications include transport provisions, blackout lights, military paint resistant to chemical agents, keyless ignition and so on.

The main role of the John Deere 850J bulldozer is earthmoving. This machine can construct defensive positions and anti-tank ditches, construct or clear obstacles, clear routes, demolish structures, and recover combat vehicles. It can even tow armored vehicles with a maximum weight of around 35-40 t.

This bulldozer is equipped with a detachable blade. A variety of blades are available. The most common is a universal blade with side wings, that allows to carry more material. Also this dozer can be fitted with a rear-mounted winch, or rake attachment.

The cab lifts upward for engine access and maintenance. For operation in hostile or combat areas these machines can be fitted with armored cabs. The add-on cab requires no modifications to the vehicle structure. It provides protection for the operator from small arms fire, artillery shell splinters and mine blasts. Bulldozers used by Australian armed forces are additionally fitted with anti-roll-over bars.

This John Deere dozer is operated by a single operator. This machine carries no defensive armament. Even versions with armored cabs are normally unarmed.

The John Deere J850 bulldozers are powered by a turbocharged diesel engines developing 185 hp, 200 hp, or even 324 hp, depending on the actual version. These machines have limited mobility. So between mission sites these are transported on semi-trailers. Roughly half of the USMC dozers are equipped with winches for recovery or self-recovery operations.

In military service a couple of these bulldozers are typically assigned to combat engineer company.
