The JCB 523M
all-terrain forklift was specially developed to meet the British
Army requirement. It entered service as the High Mobility Rough
Terrain Forklift or HMRTF.
The JCB 523M uses proven JCB telescopic handler technology. Most
likely that it is based on the
JCB
HMEE high mobility backhoe loader.
The HMRTF is
used to load and unload shipping containers and trucks. Its
telescopic boom can reach into truck and containers. This machine
can transport palletized loads and boxes. It can handle supplies
such as ammunition or missiles. The HMRTF can be used in
construction and rebuilding operations. This forklift can lift loads
with a maximum weight of 2.26 t, and lift them to the height of over
5 m. The front-mounted fork can be replaced with a universal bucket
for earthworking and other operations.
This machine
has an enclosed cab. It provides protection for the operator against
rollover and falling objects.
This
all-terrain forklift is powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins 6BT5.9-C130
turbocharged diesel engine. It develops 130 hp. Engine is mated to a
ZF 6-speed automatic gearbox. The HMRTF has a selectable 2- or
4-wheel steering. The 2-wheel steering is used while travelling on
roads. The 4-wheel steering is used when the forklift operates on
site.
Vehicle has
excellent cross-country mobility. It can go over uneven and rugged
terrain, including sand, snow and mud. Furthermore the HMVRF has a
maximum road speed of 88 km/h. It is the first dedicated telescopic
handler, capable of sustained speed. The HMVRF can travel at convoy
speeds and quickly self-deploy to the next operation site. Also it
can go over rough terrain at speed. Most military forklifts are
limited to much lower speeds and are transported on trailers.
The HMRTF
has compact dimensions. It fits in a standard 20 ft container. This
forklift can be airlifted by the
C-130 Hercules tactical cargo aircraft with minimum of
preparation. For air transportation the suspension "kneels" to
reduce height to 2 m and the machine is tied down. Also the HMRTH
can be carried underslung by a
Chinook or larger helicopter.
