The Caterpillar D3 is a small commercial bulldozer, designed and produced in the United States. It is one of the smallest dozers, produced by the Caterpillar company. Even though it was developed as a purely commercial design, this machine also found its way to military users. With constant upgrades and improvements this small and versatile bulldozer is being produced for decades. Currently it is in military service with Australia, France, and possibly some other countries.

The Caterpillar company does not manufacture any special militarized version of the D3 bulldozer. However after some modifications this earthmoving machine is employed for military applications. Modifications include transport provisions, blackout lights, special military paint resistant to chemical agents, keyless ignition and so on.

Main role of the Caterpillar D3 bulldozer is earthmoving. It is can be used for construction of defensive positions, construction of obstacles, obstacle clearing, route opening, and demolition. It can also perform light recovery and towing tasks. It can tow trucks and light armored vehicles with a maximum weight of around 12 t.

This bulldozer is equipped with a detachable blade. Various blades can be fitted, such as straight blade or universal blade. A rear-mounted ripper or winch attachment can be fitted.

This dozer is operated by a single operator. Older models of the Caterpillar D3 have open cabs, while the latest dozers have fully-enclosed cabs. This machine carries no defensive armament. The main reason is that these small dozers typically operate in remote areas, where is no threat.

This crawler dozer is powered by a Caterpillar diesel engine. Engine of the latest D3K Series dozer develops 80 hp.

In military service a couple of Caterpillar D3 bulldozers are typically assigned to combat engineer company.
