The Caterpillar 130G grader has been in service with the US military for more than 30 years. It was adopted by the US military in the late 1970s. Basically it was a standard commercial construction machine, with some minor modifications in order to suit military requirements. The Caterpillar company had no special military version of the 130G grader. Some of these graders received Caterpillar Service Life Extension Program (SLEP). These were repaired and refurbished, in order to keep them operational. The 130G grader was eventually replaced by a new Caterpillar 120M grader. Its deliveries commenced to the US Army, Navy and Marine Corps in 2012. The new 120M is a much more advanced machine. It is fitted with modern grade control technologies and has better working environment for the operator. A number of ex-military 130G graders found their way into civil market.

The Caterpillar 130G grader has 3 axles. This machine has 6x4 configuration. Engine and cab are situated above the rear axles. There is a wide blade in between the 1st and 2nd axles. After some modifications, such as flat military paint, blackout lights, transport provisions, keyless ignition, and other, this road grading machine was used for military roles. By modern standards performance of the Caterpillar 130G grader is rather humble when compared to other modern commercial graders. Though at the time it was a successful design.

The Caterpillar 130G was designed to create a flat surface during the grading process. Graders create fine "finish grade", while the "rough grading" is performed by bulldozers, scrappers, or other military engineer vehicles. The Caterpillar 130G was designed for construction and maintenance of dirt and gravel roads. This machine can prepare the base course to create a wide flat surface for paved roads. It can also produce inclined surface to give cant to roads, or produce drainage ditches. Additional front blade and rear ripper can be attached.

This US military grader was used for construction of airfields, landing zones, defensive berms, anti-tank ditches and for other military earthmoving tasks.

The operator has good visibility. An armored cab could be installed for operation in various hotspots. It provided protection for the operator against small arms fire, artillery shell splinters and various blasts. This grader carried no defensive armament, as it typically operated in rear areas.

A number of options were available for these militarized graders. These included a cold starting kit (which allows to start the machine at -40C), deep fording kit and some other. Optional equipment installed on these graders differs depending on the US military branch. For example US Navy machines have some optional equipment, that is not present on US Army machines.

This machine is powered by a 7-liter Caterpillar 3304 turbocharged diesel engine, developing 135 hp at flywheel. Transmission of this grader has 6 forward and 6 reverse speeds. This grader can be airlifted by various military transport aircraft.
